|
|
Long story short over Xmas my crapwon foolishly thought they could do an extensive renovation in 6 days - Fri 24 - Wed 29. This was our scheduled vacation period, for a total of 4 days vacation.
I get an email the day before we are supposed to go back saying that the school won't be open til the following Monday but to come in for a "meeting" on the Friday afternoon. This amounted to 2 "extra" days off for us.
We were paid normally in January, but I am wondering if the school has the right to count it as 6 vacation days? We WERE required to come in on one afternoon, yet we were not given the option of coming to work as usual (to prep or whatever), it wasn't prescheduled, etc.
I would like to take a couple of days off in the next few months, but am scared to incase my "leave" has run out - sick days are not an option as I have none in my contract.
Any advice would be appreciated! |

it's a hagwon. they're free to do what ever they want.
however, if you feel it's unjust, you can complain to them or sue them if you like. |

Why don't you just ask them how many vacation days you have left? |

Because I know what they will say and I want to know if I have any legal ground to stand on before this conversation goes down ... |

If you're wondering about "legal ground", then why not call the Labor Board and ask directly? Dial 1350. |

This is a contractual issue.
What does your contract say about vacation? |

Vacation days are NOT only a contractual issue. Look at the labor standards act concerning vacation. If your contract offers less than the act, the act nullifies your contracted vacation clause. The labor standards act is the legal MINIMUM. Your contract is not binding if it it less than that.

How convenient for them. "Oh we couldn't open, so that's your vacation."
I'd laugh at them. |

You work for a hagwon.
By definition, a hagwon is a dishonest business.
Just shrug this off. Ask how many vacation days you have left, then accept the answer. It's not worth fighting for.
EXPECT to have something stolen from you. It's how business is done here. |

I'm an apologist who agrees with the previous poster.
Ask your boss kindly with a small snack or gift in tow. If you disagree with his position then call the Labor Board but risk having your reputation at the school tarnished, especially in the future when you are looking for a reference. |
