Is this a normal price for it? or have I just found an expensive notary public? It seems like a lot of money to me.

Thanks in advance.

No. They will just sign and stamp the back of your original CBC.

Then go to Milton Keynes and get it Apostilled.

Done

Just get any Solicitor to sign it, Notary Public to Americans are Solicitors to us, I just went to the Solicitors opposite the Foreign Office Apostille place in Milton Keynes and they did it for 5.

Notary Publics to us are very specialised individuals, there's only around a couple of hundred in all England, you don't need one for getting your CRC and degree copy certified.

I think there are a lot more notary publics than that. My father was one and whilst he was more elite than your regular neighbourhood solicitor he wasn't 1/200 in the country. It certainly is a further certification above being a regular solicitor, but it's not quite as elite as you make it out to be.

And a regular solicitor certainly cannot do notarisations or apostilles. It might be that the solicitors office you went to had one or two notary publics who could do notarisations though.

Only the foreign office can do apostilles. And they won't do it in person after April this year; you'll have to do it by post.

For more information about apostilles in the UK see: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what-we-do/services-we-deliver/legal-services/legalisation/

Actually, notary publics are also found in other industries. You can use people at the local county court or some people in banks with no legal qualifications are also legally entitled to do it.

That would depend on where you are in the UK. Technically speaking, it's possible for all legally certified solicitors in Scotland to be used as notary publics. Very few actually offer it as a service, but it is possible.

Didn't know that =)

But they have a completely different legal system anyway. You can probably get a notarisation free with your deep fried slice of pizza (notice I didn't use Mars Bar: clever!)

I went to uni there and worked for more than a year after and never knew this. But then again, I never applied to be a prison guard, kindergarten worker, or English teacher in Korea whilst living there, so I had no use for notaries. (if they're even needed to certify CBCs in that kind of situation.. no idea..)

I have found a Solicitors place in Norwich (where I'm living at the moment) who can do it for 5-7 much cheaper then that woman was offering. Will they be ok to notarize it?

Thank you all for your help.

Yes.

If they WEREN'T a notary they would not offer the service. The fact that they are offering it means they obviously are.

The price is the same as my father was charging about 18 years ago. So the price is great. For a notarisation.

All the Foreign Office Apostille office cares about is that your documents have "I CERTIFY THAT THIS DOCUMENT IS AN ORIGINAL DOCUMENT/IS A GENIUNE COPY - Signed, Mr John Smith, Solicitor" written on the back, then the stamp of the organisation.

You'll get your apostille on your document whether you pay 5 or 70 (average price for full Notary Publics).

I paid 20 pounds. Now I feel ripped off.

That woman wanted 70 pounds because she is a greedy 4 letter word begining with c and ending with t.

That's why it pays to shop around. Wink
