There have been numerous studies done that show Asians, in general, vote along with and get along better with whites than other minority groups. From my observations here, Koreans tend to look down on the Chinese, Jewish, Black, and even hispanic crowds. I do think you're over-generalizing the issue.

Maybe your family does... |
I was just as surprised as you. I have heard old and younger Koreans rant about Israel. But yes, prejudice and bigotry exist against Jews, even for Koreans. |
It's just the opposite of what I've experienced. I'm an atheist, but don't really let that slip here. If they ask if I'm a Christian, I just say that I'm Jewish (I am culturally, after all,) and usually they ask a bunch of questions and compare the fighting that the Jewish people have had to endure to the Korean people. We overcome and all that. The young ones? Meh. I lost respect for people at around age 14 and don't gain it back until they're around 30.
Thanks for the insight, though. |
Koreans do not love Jews. In fact, they rip on American Jews quite a bit.

". . . [We Koreans] can never surpass the wall of Jews in American society." (page 221)
(In response to the statement "Hollywood is controlled by the Jews.") "Boy, in that case how could America possibly be free from the Jews?" (page 246) |

Again, not the ones I've met. I haven't met them all, of course, but I've met a fair share. I've had a few over to celebrate some holidays, and have celebrated Christmas and Easter with some at their homes. I'm doing Passover this year, and have Koreans attending.
<<shrugs>>
Intolerant people exist everywhere. I suppose I've chosen wisely when making most of my Korean friends. |

Try reading the link, and the blog those pictures come from - http://monnarakorea.blogspot.com/2007/02/chapter-8-pages-243-249-wherein-we.html. They definitely respect Jews, but they also envy them (Nobel Prizes!!!!!!) and most adult Koreans, if you pry, will believe in Jewish conspiracies. However, they know you are Jewish, and aren't going to go into those details with you. Still, as the other poster said, I've heard these rants many times.
That doesn't mean they can't be friendly to you and go to Passover at your house. They aren't Nazi skinheads, after all.
I'm not trying to single out Jews or anything. I'm just saying they don't have some vaunted place among minorities in the Korean worldview. You seemed to take objection with Jews being listed alongside Chinese, Latinos, and black people as groups Koreans discriminate against. |

Doubtful. By redefining "objectivity" to mean the active refusal to consider or interact with real-world data, and by denying my rationality through a vicious straw man (as to the best of my memory I have never positively argued blacks are inferior in any general, unqualified sense, and have even stated that I think the primary problem blacks suffer from in the United States is cultural), she's essentially stripped me of my most effective weapons while simultaneously rendering herself nearly invulnerable. She can now "vomit" on our forum with impunity.
This isn't how this conversation turned out in my head (though Vulcans did come up in that one too, but in a more positive context instead of as some strange attack). |

| I've yet to meet a single Korean who even knew what a Jew was before I explained it to them. I suspect Koreans with strong opinions about Jews either way are in the small minority, and I think the idea that Koreans discriminate against Jews in the same sense that they do against blacks or latinos is pretty dubious. |

I don't believe that. Then ask them what they think about Israelis, or say the Korean word. 유태인 - yoo-tae-in
If you started explaining religious beliefs, then I could imagine them acting like they'd never heard of Jews. |

They know what Israel is, but they seem to know nothing about the people who live there beyond the fact that it's in the Middle East and there are regional tensions. They also seem totally disinterested in learning more. |

| Racism is allowed in North America, unless you're white. If I can't use the "N" word, blacks shouldn't use their own phrases either. I'm not racist, but don't like idiots from any race or when some of us experience xenophobia here. As one poster said, some of the other people who were saying racist comments towards whites ought to be equally sanctioned and punished. It's just common sense. |

Probably irrelevant and definitely off-topic (but given the topic, I think that's a plus), but educated Chinese are familiar with Jews, and curious about them.
One comment I particularly enjoyed went something like this: "The Chinese are such masters at assimilating minorities, that we even assimilated the Jews." (Jews in China)
They have a point. Although the Chinese have traditionally allowed minorities to preserve their religious observance (it gets more complicated after Mao), so too did the Roman Empire. But of course Judea famously revolted from the Romans. |

Oh, I didn't take offense at being listed with other minorities. I was just surprised because of the reactions that I'd encountered here in regards to being of Jewish ancestry. Hell, I have Cuban, Japanese, Guatemalan, and (more recently) Puerto Rican and Black people in my family. Our Passover dinners are awesome.
Anyway, I usually get the "same same" vibe when it comes to both peoples being bashed and recovering. Live and let live, yes? |

My handphone dictionary says his spelling is the correct one, with 유태 being Judea, 유태교 being Judaism, 유태인 being a Jew. 유태민족
being the Jews collectively, and 유태민족주의 being Zionism.
This is why I prefer Sino-Korean words to native Korean ones. The construction system is so simple, intuitive, and powerful. |

Actually I second guessed myself on that one. I could have sworn it was yoo-dae-in, but having never seen it spelled in korean, I looked it up.
Re: Koreans not knowing Jews are: I suppose you might be right, a lot of them are just completely clueless. I'd say that that is pretty pathetic though, and on par with Americans who ask, "So which Korea do you teach in, North or South?"
I'm going to start asking if they know why there are black people in America.
Still, the ones who are aware of Jews, especially regarding those in America and regarding American-Israeli ties, almost always tend to sympathize with conspiracy theories like in Rhie Wonbok's social studies book. |
