Hello,
I am going on vacation and I have an alien resident card with only a single entry on it. I need to change that but don't have the time. I have been told before that it can be done at the airport on your way out. How do you do that? What is the cost?

| It doesn't matter anymore, so long as your ARC is still valid. Just show them your ARC and you're on your way. |

Effective Dec. 1, 2010, all registered foreigners no longer require a re-entry permit to come and go.
You are free to travel without restriction within the valid period of your ARC.

Effective Dec. 1, 2010, all registered foreigners no longer require a re-entry permit to come and go.
You are free to travel without restriction within the valid period of your ARC.

Do they still stamp your passport and what happens if you lose your ARC when you are due to return to Korea? Also can we now use the Korean only line when coming back to Korea like people with teaching visas in Japan can when returning from vacation? |

Yes, they still stamp your passport (entry and exit) as you go through passport control.
No, unless you are F5, you cannot use the Korean only lanes when returning to Korea.
IF you lose your ARC when abroad you will need to go to see the supervisor (the little office beside the passport counters) to verify your status in Korea and report the loss of your ARC. It will cause a delay of 15-45 minutes (depending on how busy they are).
Loss of your ARC when abroad can also cause problems at check-in time when you go to get your boarding pass (you have no proof that you are entitled to re-entry other than as a tourist on a visa waiver stamp (with the attendant requirements).
Don't lose your ARC or expect problems and delays.

Given this new law , when I went into customs and immigration today to apply for an alien card, I was still asked to choose between a single entry visa versus a multiple entry one.  |

If you have a visa why would you need a new one (single or multi)?
If you don't have a visa how did you apply for an ARC?
A visa is only used for your initial entry into the country.
You had to enter on a valid visa to get an ARC.
If you are applying for an ARC you don't need a new visa (never did).

Yes, you're right: I entered Korea with an E2 visa. What I meant about the single entry versus the multiple entry is the stamp immigration puts in your passport when you go to apply for the ARC. The form for the ARC asks whether the applicant wants a single entry stamp (10,000 KRW) or a multiple entry stamp (50,000 KRW). I was wondering if the new law, as brought up by the OP, refer to what I'm talking about? And if so, why am I still asked to check in the boxes between the two choices: single entry or multiple entry given this new law? |

Old form (and it was 30,000 and 50,000).
They have, for many years now, been a one size fits all application form (ARC application, change of address, change of personal information, re-entry permits, etc) where you just ticked the boxes at the top to denote what you were applying for or changing and then filled in your personal information at the bottom.
The forms simply haven't been updated yet (they probably have an inventory of several million pages to use up) and if you don't need the "re-entry permit" then you just don't tick that box.
When they print the new forms I suspect it will change and those boxes will no longer be there.
