Rumor or Fact: Private Lessons

I heard a rumor that NESTs can now give private English lessons legally, without any fines or other penalities. I know in the past, doing private lessons was illegal (although hard to enforce) and that there were occasional crackdowns, but my source said the law changed recently.

Is that true or what? I'm a bit skeptical, but I wanted to try Dave's first before calling Immigration.

I'm going to have a lot of free time coming up, so it would be nice if I can earn some extra income. If I can't, then 'oh well', but can a teacher on an E2-1 do them legally now, or is that B.S.?

There has been a change to taking a second job, but this has to be cleared by you primary employer and immigration, and there has to be paperwork to validate it all (as well as certain caveats)

So, possibly taking a 2nd job - ok. Just teaching ad-hoc privates here and there - not ok.

If it were true, I'm sure the F2s would be up in arms.

Even Korean citizens get arrested for doing private lessons, although for which reason I do not know. They probably were evading taxation or asking too much for the lessons etc... (I just caught the gist of it on KBS news a few days ago.)

As I understand it, F class Visa holders with qualification can do private lessons legally if they don't have contracts with schools that prohibit them from doing so.

Someone please correct this if it's inaccurate, changed, or updated..

E-2 = "Enslavement" visa

F-2 = "Freedom" visa

In an attempt to reduce the amount parents spend on private education the government made it illegal for anyone except students to teach privately. Korean citizens and F visa holders (not F1 and F3) are able to register for a tutoring licence but this tutoring must be carried out in the teacher's home.

All income must be reported to the government regardless of visa, citizenship, sock color or taste in music.

Oh boy...the enslavement comment again.

How innapropriate for those people who are or were slaves or in near servitude.

Oh look westerner got flown over and is housed and gainfully employer, he can also leave ANYTIME he wishes but has to follow certain visa restrictions as a foreign worker...slavery! Free my people!

Many people teach freelance that is true. However, some teachers DO get arrested and deported. Just because a person does not know of one case does not mean it does not happen.

It is pretty much a risk calculus: weigh the benefits vs the potential consequences. Once you have done that, it is your choice and you must be ready to live with the consequences if things go bad.

I for one, being an E2 visa holder will not teach privates. I don't care how tempting it is, with my luck I'd be caught and deported. It's just not worth it, especially when I'm marrying a Korean national next year anyway.
