Today I was told my my coteacher that the Gyeonggi office of education has told all schools to not renew or hire new teachers until August. She tried to explain that the funding structure may be changing (20% individual school, 50% GEPIK and 30% city) and GEPIK may be trying to have only two major intakes per year instead of hiring throughout the year as they do now. Furthermore, GEPIK is cutting a certain number of positions (she said "100 schools" will lose their foreign teacher), and how the funding will fall will be determined later. There might be a small error or two in the communication, but that is a summary of our conversation.

My question to you all is: for those in GEPIK, have you been told this? I have a good relationship with my school and was considering renewing, but my contract ends in the middle of June. This makes things problematic, to say the least.

GEPIK is cutting funding and either the schools or local boards will have to pick up the slack or lose their NET.

They are looking to shed about 200 NETS from the system (mostly by attrition; lower intake numbers) and will re-allocate or replace those NETs who are in schools that won't be funded by the local board or city.

Schools still have and always had the ability to fund a NET from their local budgets if the really want to keep their NET.

I understand that, and have been aware of that the general situation for some time. However, I was under the impression that most of the jobs being cut would come from schools that had more than one teacher (reducing the number of NETs at a particular school to one). I am the only teacher at my school, and I was hoping my job was safe. I guess not! Sad

This is totally true! Before the economic meltdown sent refugees to South Korea, the schools in my area would fund their own teachers because they couldnt get anyone. Usually they hired Filipinos and Gyopos. They would get similar pay (maybe 1.5-1.8M) but would work a little more (25 hours a week) and maybe had fewer vacation days.

Ttompatz - I know that you dont work for GEPIK, but in your infinite wisdom, do you think that they prefer teachers already here (that would seem logical, but we know how ESL in Korea works) or newbies fresh off the boat? My area of GEPIK doesnt even have a coordinator so I have no idea who to work with when the axe eventually falls.

@shosta
You must have someone for a coordinator. There are 8 women that are supposed to oversee all parts of GEPIK. When was your last GEPIK meeting? Could be you aren't working for them...

There was a woman that worked with my area at orientation, but only because my HUGE area is so small population wise that they didnt know where else to put us. She is not officially our coordinator from what I understand, so other than simple questions she hasnt been able to help me a lot.

I can confirm this. My contract ends May 30th and my school only has budget to keep me through June. I will go home for the month of July and then take a CELTA course in August. After that it's really anyone's guess but I am getting my paperwork together and I have been in touch with a couple of recruiters.

Should the axe fall, contact the policy division ( I don't have the number handy but it should be on the GEPIK home page) at the GPOE in Suwon, Jowondong (about 1 block east of home plus then turn south for about 2km. It is on the right hand side as you go down the hill to the river.

If you get to the river you went too far, turn around and you will see it.

Straight in the main building. 2nd floor. Door slightly to the left of the stairs as you are going up.

Alternatively, hit up a few recruiters and look to transfer to a new position.

If you want another "rural" position the chances of being accepted are substantially higher than someone looking to go to Bundang.
