I was expecting to get my final paycheck today, but my boss has decided to pay me on my very last day, which is tomorrow. He also told me today that I need to pay for a company to come clean my room after I leave. I planned to clean it myself, but he says he has to hire someone and I must pay for it. This is not in my contract. Also he owes me 2 vacation days, one of which he said was used by a snow day. Also, I purchased my own ticket home because I wanted to make sure I got a flight since he was taking so long, but now he wants to give me very little flight money because he thinks he can get a cheaper ticket on gmarket. What should I do?

How quickly can they work though? My flight leaves Monday morning at like 5am. I don't want to leave Korea without my money.

Also I want to wait until tomorrow and try to work it out, but am I waiting too long?

you're leaving tomorrow so what will you do?

1. take the loss and go home.
2. stay longer and sue your boss.

Staying isn't an option though. I have to leave. I suppose if he didn't pay anything I would be forced to stay.

I've never once had a problem with my boss and he's actually a really cool guy. It's just now that it comes down to a large sum of money that he's trying to be stingy. How effective would it be to threaten him with

A. Telling the incoming teacher to back out.
B. Contacting the pension office since I don't pay pension
C. Contact Labor Board.

Also, I don't pay health insurance. He has an insurance card for a vietnamese guy and I've used that when going to the doctor. Strangely enough they don't question it at the doctor's office.

I would rather not make threats, but which should I use if I must?

a) Don't threaten anything; it will give him (in his eyes) grounds to screw you further. Just do it.

b) unless you are willing to stay to deal with it, not a threat.
c) see (b).
d) NHIC - see (b)

No, staying is an option. Here is what you should do. Call the airline and ask them if you can change date of departure. I have done this numerous times when things have come up at the last minute or when I simply wanted to extend my vacation.

Tell your boss that you will clean it and that he can inspect it to make sure that it is clean before you leave. Then you could probably look up last minute airfares on G-market and call his bluff. If you planned this well, it's unlikely that he could find a fare that is significantly cheaper than what is currently available.

you're being screwed because you're in a screwable position (HA!)...In all seriousness though...there's no such thing as a cleaning fee, unless it was stated in your contract (but there never is)....it is the responsibility of the school to clean/maintain its own property (do you have a desk cleaning fee?).
--You need to show him your receipt for your ticket to show him what's owed (be nice yet stern)
--Keep in mind that it only costs about 40,000 for an ajumma to clean your apartment (I paid 200,000 for a professional team to clean my apartment before I moved in, ~25 pyeong, a very large two room)
--So *technically you're still owed a vacation day (should be two), figure out your daily income and show what's owed
---Do everything politely, and state that you've had a great year at his school and need/want to leave on good terms

edit--No pension? Can really only blame you...you should've dealt with this from month one...demand everything, plus 1,000,000W for pension (which is less than he would owe)....

How was the apartment when you moved in? I have never moved into a clean place. Ever.

Ditto. I'm STILL removing more dirt when I clean than I bring in to the place. It's just now starting to seem somewhat acceptable to me.
