1800 won per minute?! You were badly misquoted. The rate comes out to around 108 won per minute.

There are too many optimus models to give accurate pricing. But the optimus one is the low end coming in at 649k for the KT version and 660k for the SK version. The optimus 2x is 920,500. Those are all before discounts though. The galaxy s just had a price drop not too long ago to 900k. Your discounts depend on which plan you sign up for. The higher a monthly plan is...the bigger the discount.

Does anyone have any info on using an American smartphone in Korea? I keep seeing conflicting information. According to this http://expatblog.kt.com/36 if it's unlocked and WCDMA then you can. Then I see stuff about GSM and it's just a matter of a SIM card. Which is true? Both? Something else? Anyone know the answers? Thanks.

NEWS FLASH: HTC DESIRE HD HAS PROBLEMS
Actually it's not cool! It's one of the worst purchases I've ever made. I've been to the service center numerous times because the screen locked up on me.

(-) Screen locks up
(-) The spell checker changes correct spelling into incorrect spelling (Happens every time I write a test message)
(-) The sync did not work with my PC.
(-) Volume adjustment came off the side with normal use
(-) Camera suddenly stopped working - The phone gives an error message (insert SD card) I never took the SD card out

This phone has caused me to waste time, waste money, and waste my patience.

My recommendation... DO NOT BUY!

None of my customers have had any problems with the Desire HD.

The biggest piece of junk I have dealt with on the business side of the counter at a phone store is the Dell Streak. with the iPhone 4 coming in a close second.

These days I'm partial to the Motorola Atrix (even though I hear intermittent complaints of it getting physically warm to the touch)

and I really dig the Evo 4G+ for KT phones.

For SK phones, probably the Galaxy S2 LTE. It has a couple of upgrades over the original S2 model.

I have basically stopped dealing with SK since my store is closing and I'm moving over to a KT branch store instead of the little independent shop I manage now. Therefore I'm really out of touch with SK phones and more in touch with KT phones.

From what I understand SK/LG will be charging extra for the LTE service (can someone confirm or deny?)

KT doesn't charge anything extra for their 4G (which is run on the Wibro network).

With KT enacting the new Fair Price system and not charging for the 4G service, Kt looks like an all around better deal. You can snag the Evo 4G+ for an extra 2,500 per month on top of the 55k unlimited data plan, very cheap for a good phone.

Thanks for the recommendations Drew10. Definitely something to mull over.

I have a bit of a dilemma in that I already own an ipod touch 4G but I'm looking to upgrade to a smartphone in the coming weeks. If there was any way to make it a phone, it would serve all my needs! I want to maintain my library of e-books, apps and music but purchasing an iphone seems a waste of money.

Having researched the EVO 4G+ that you recommended, it seems that the main concern is with battery life. What has your experience been with it?

I personally own a Galaxy Tab.

I know that the Evo comes with 2 batteries. However, like all phones...Battery life depends on how you use it. If you're constantly using the 4G, or watching movies/using bluetooth/using GPS..things like that..Of course the battery life is going to be trash.

When I get to work tomorrow I'll check the batteries and see what the capacity is. I can't give you an average for battery drain, but the capacity should b a slight indicator of battery quality.

I'm aware that the HTC Evo 4G+ has a battery life of 1500mAh with an average talk time of around 6hrs. The Motorola Atrix has a battery life of 1930mAh which is obviously much better.

As mentioned previously, I'll just be using this for messaging, a few calls and light browsing during my commute. My ipod touch can take all of the more battery-intensive activities!

An interesting point was raised on the Blackberry thread in this forum. The poster mentioned that an iphone 4, GSII and the Blackberry 9900 were free with a 55,000 data plan from SK. Any news of this and any similar deals with your guys at KT?

Also, are there any deals with the iphone 3GS? Surely some stores must have some inventory that they haven't been able to shift?

Still struggling to decide what phone to get! Saw the 3 year options for a free Galaxy SII or iPhone 4 but not really willing to be tied to a contract of that length.

Any news on when further phones will be released with KT?

You can't go wrong with a Galaxy S2. It's quite simply the best smartphone out there......don't worry too much about being tied to a contract. I don't think the payment for quitting the contract early is that much. It will probably save money to start and quit a contract early than any other method.

Can someone chime in on how much it costs to quit a contract early?

It just depends

-on what the price of your phone was when you took out the contract,
-on the monthly discount you were getting
-and on how much of the contract is left.

When you sign a 2 or 3 year contract for a smartphone and get the phone for free, you have to understand what 'getting it for free' means in that context.

The price of the phone will not be zero. It'll actually be a very large amount. But each of the monthly installments you pay towards the price of the handset will be discounted to such an extent that the total of monthly installment MINUS discount on monthly installment EQUALS nothing, or damn close to nothing, effectively making it free or near thereto.

The problem (if you quit the contract early) is that this discount on the price of the handset only applies to the monthly installments that you've agreed to pay for 24/36 months.

To put some numbers on that - let's say you have a contract for 3 years for an S2 with the handset coming "free" in that deal, and its actual price is 950k. Each month your 26000 or so installment will be discounted down to around zero. If you see the 3 years out, you'll pay close to zero for the phone. But if you cancel after 1 year, you'll be liable for the remaining 2 years installments immediately and all at once without any discount on them.

So, in other words, your "cancellation fee" for that particular contract after one year of the 3 years would be 630,000 (undiscounted monthly installment amount TIMES number of installments remaining) and would hopefully not be one of the more sensible financial decisions you made in your life. Smile
Cancelling just 1 year early would be half that amount and I'd suspect a hit of 315k to cancel would still be more than most folk would think was clever.

Cancelling with just a few months left on a phone that wasn't all that pricey in the first place, on the other hand, will often make a lot of sense. Probably the "real" price of the phone you had before your smartphone wasn't that much and this may lead to an impression that "it doesn't cost much to cancel". Be careful though, because the real price of your smartphone will be a big lot more.

Good info, B-class.

So I retract what I said earlier!! Probably not a good idea to get a contract and quit early........unless you take the run-on-the-bill route of course!!
