No, but they might have known the person who had your number before. Mine apparently belonged to this guy in gwangju who just stepped out of his life one day and I got the number. I've been getting notifications for what appear to be important appointments and several calls weekly from the gwangju area.

These will show up in the app

They may very well be those spammers sending you texts. Your phone automatically sees them and that they have kakao, and adds them. It is annoying.

spammers don't send them from their phone and kakao doesn't see them unless you add them to your address book.

What it likely is is someone who knew someone who had your number and has a smartphone with an old number in their phone.

If you've had the number a long time, it's possible someone mistyped.

Fair enough. It was just a guess.

Can we make free texts internationally with this?

Meaning we can text for free someone without KKT, but they will have to pay to text us if they don't have it, right? My mother does not have a smartphone; I am guessing she will have to pay an international texting fee if she texts me back?

KKT is only for texting between KKT users. You can't text someone who doesn't use KKT with this. So no, you can't. However KKT is available on android and the iphone internationally, so it can be used internationally. Another good alternative is pingchat. I like KKT for in korea stuff, but I use Pingchat for a few friends I have back home. it's also cross platform and free.

This program is so unreliable sometimes. I get messages but it doesn't notify me, it doesn't even put an icon in the corner. I was waiting for a reply, and didn't get it until I went back into the conversation window.

It's been happening for the last few days.

I prefer normal messaging.......I don't get what's good about Kakao...I never do anywhere near the limit of free SMS per month so Kakao wouldn't save me any money....

I suspect it's just a fad.

There are several apps like this, both in Korea and not. They're nowhere near a fad. Just because you don't use the 300 text message a month limit doesn't mean a lot of other people don't. It works out to about 10 text messages a day, which seems like a lot, but a shot time going back and forth with a couple people, and you can easily go over it. Some people use their phone a lot more than other people. Kakao, Pingchat, and a few others are basically just free SMS and free picture/video messaging. Your text plan likely covers regular texts only.

Kakao is also good for group chat, and ping chat includes a few extra options, like sending a location. Like someone trying to meet you but can't seem to pinpoint where you are. Just send them a google map snap shot of your location automatically.

Kakao talk also lets you send gifts. Someone's birthday? Boyfriend/Girlfriend? Or just want to be nice to a friend, you can send them a coupon (Which you pay for) through the phone so they can pick it up at their leisure.

It'll show up as a message, they take it to the shop, the shop scans it/inputs the code and they get their free item.

At first, I felt the same way with eamo. I rarely send text messages and if I ever do, it could just be about 9 messages for the month if not at all. But I really hate the limited characters (90 for regular, 80 for handcent). That's the only reason why I use those 3rd party chat.
