OP, where do you live? If you are near me, I am willing to put on a suit and go to your school and have a talk with your boss. I will claim to be from some agency that helps foreigners who are being victimized.

Really now? I have a feeling this might make things worse. How many times have you done this to hagwon bosses?

I have personal experience with this....it doesn't work and they figure out it's a fraud fairly quick since koreans rarely bring out lawyers(they'll quiz the friend)...also, he'd have to speak excellent korean.

Becoming a lawyer here is fairly high satus and closed to most people...you can't jst enroll in a 4th tier law school here and become a korean lawyer like in the states.

Ok guys, I've contacted the labor board, and they want me to come file a formal complaint. I have two problems now.

1. The hours of the labor board are the exact match of my working hours 9-6 M-F. How can I I go there during the day to fill out this form without causing too much damage to myself? My boss thinks I'm a little piece of ****, so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be allowed any vacation the last week I'm working here. I'm not even allowed to leave the school even on my lunch break, so I'm jailed to the school pretty much. Should I sneak out during and lunch and just get yelled at when I get back? Should I pretend that I slept in and come to work 40 mins late? Oh if I do that, I'll get crap all day thrown at me. Should I intentionally get myself sick? I need to get there ASAP before she calls in because I understand if she calls first I won't be getting my pay. Why is it so bad if the employer calls in first anyways? Do Koreans not believe in two sides to a story?

2. I gave my 6 weeks notice, but my boss wants me out after only 3 weeks of my notice. The new teacher will be there by then, so my apparently horrible teaching will no longer be needed. Is there anyway I can be screwed by this?

I'd sneak out or say you have to go to the bank and send money back home or something like that.

So she is firing you. You get 30 days pay if fired without notice.

Where is the labor board as compared to your workplace?

It's about a 10 minute cab ride to and fro.

If she actually goes through with it, yes.

When did you give your notice? When is the expected day that you are out on your butt?

That's something I use to negotiate to get another job. You can also use it as a way to be able to stay in the country if you feel you need to take legal action to collect other money.

Don't look at this as one lump of cash. Divide and conquer.

How can they do that? What could he be blacklisted for?

I know of someone that was refused an E-2 for simply filing a labor ministry complaint, the reason for the denial "labor dispute."

Interesting. Do you have any details on that? When? What city? What was the dispute about?

OP. How did things turn out in the end?

She is suing you and firing you all at the same time. Call in sick and go to labor board. Start taking a stand instead of taking up the butt. And dont even consider paying her a penny!!! Make sure you stop at tax office to see if she made your tax payments as well. Next time look for a non teaching job...it doesnt sound like you are fit for this profession.

Wow, I wonder how this turned out. I'm 100% sure that the OP didn't get sued... but I really hope that the hagwon he worked for is having a hard time replacing him.

If I were the OP, I would be posting the school's name on every message board I could find. It's utterly absurd that anyone would ever think that they can sue their employees because students quit!!!!

To be honest, if I were the OP and this was my situation, I might have actually considered hanging in there for a few extra weeks in order to make sure I could get as many students to quit as possible-- and then pulled a runner.

That's why the OP was forced to leave March 31. You can't let someone work for you who is actively getting students to quit.

Also, it's likely they had no problem getting a new teacher to start April 1 (which is another reason why the OP was told to leave March 31 and not the 6 weeks she wanted)
