Going to the police is a smart move. Do you have any Korean friends? Someone who can translate for you? Also don't go in their angry. Play into it by acting scared and worried.
With a police report filed, at least you'll have something on file. |

Jeez. To think this kind of crap was going on in hagwons back in '97. Nothing changes.
Listen Buddy for what it's worth your garbage employers are violating the Korean labour laws. Clause 2 of the Korean LSA (Labour Standards Act) states:
An employer must not resort to dismissal, lay off, suspension, transfer, reduction of wages or any other discliplinary action without justifiable cause
I guess you know the Ministry of Labour's website? www.molab.go.kr They do have an English page but it's hard to navigate through all the guff, ministerial speeches and stats that are displayed to impress the foreign community but serve no helpful purpose at all to people in your situation.
If you don't have an interpreter and need immediate expression of your side of the story I can only suggest you try the Seoul Hot Line that allegedly Assists foreigners with living information in Seoul Phone Number: 080 731 0911
Listen I'd translate for you but my time is not available during weekdays and I'm off to Pusan for the weekend. You're welcome to PM me if things get desperate.
Keep cool and smile through the confrontations. When they see they don't have a leg to stand on and are breaking the law they'll start smiling too, to save face. |

In korea the guy who hits first is more in the wrong, but they look to see the damage done. DO NOT HIT A KOREAN.....it is really a bad idea. Can you speak to the police to explain...NO!
Do not give stupid advice..if he wants to hit you, then leave and run away....i am telling you it is not like Canada or America where you can attack someone who deserves it. You will burn for hitting him. |

You will pay- seriously. Last year some loser called my wife some name because she was with a waygook- then proceeded to throw a soju bottle at us- and then chased us down the street and grabbed her by the hair! So I did just what I would have done anywhere else in the world- I beat the ever-loving shit out of him. He got in some good punches, but I made the most massive mistake- I repeatedly hit him in the face. THIS IS A BIG NO-NO HERE! DO NOT HIT A KOREAN IN THE FACE!! There was no real lasting damage- but a few months later the prosecutor tells me I will be prosecuted because this bitch had more damage then I did. I had to settle this with the guy or go to court, pay, and then settle it with the guy. Legal extortion. I had to give the guy 1.5 mil to avoid court.
Still, on remembering it now, it was worth every won to see him beat down so hard. I had a lot of pent up hostility (due to the way my poor wife is treated when she is with me) and when he grabbed her hair- well I just lost it on his pansy ass. In your situation, I probably wouldn��t fight the guy and I would say as little as humanly possible to him till this gets sorted out. Good luck! |

UPDATE: I just came back from the police station. Fun times. Thanks Gladiator for that phone number - if it wasn't for that I'd probably still be there drinking coffee and bowing to everyone while getting told (repeatedly) "No communication!". (On a related note, one cop wanted my number for English lessons. I was like, "No way! That's not legit!")
I don't know if the labour board will help but no one's answering the phone when I call. It will take me a good two hours to get there. Grim times, grim times.
The cops called my school and made me speak to the female boss (and I use the term 'female' lightly here - she's more of an inanimate object than a human being). More threats! More lies! The hatred that she has for me is unbelievable - my boss and his wife always told me how much they despise Indians (their accents) and kyopos (apparently their English isn't good) but I think that they hate me more. Why? Who knows!
Anyway, there's more problems to deal with. Let's see what happens with the labour board. My hopes aren't high. |
