westerners are too accepting of being fat and koreans are too critical. there needs to be a balance.
there was some law, maybe a year ago that passed in japan about being overweight.
but you know, trying to stay thin in america is difficult, it's like everything is set up for you to be fat. |
I remember watching My Name Is Sam Soon some years ago, and while every character was saying "Sam Soon is fat," I was thinking, "Are any of you familiar with BMI?"
Being overweight is generally a bad thing but so is being underweight. While it is possible to have a low BMI and still be healthy, I do wonder if this is the case for people who achieve or are trying to achieve a smaller size. At one point, the reporter in the video says, "...people now sacrifice sleep and meals in order to improve their physical aspects" (starts 5:10 in the video).
Eating disorder is definitely a term that crops up in Western culture, and I wonder to what extent this term appears in Korea, particularly within the classroom. Or if this term isn't specifically used, to what extent is balance suggested? (I've come across a lot of examples of "s-line/choco-abs.") |
"Are any of you familiar with the fact that BMI is total BS?"
According to BMI, Arnold at his prime was probably morbidly obese. LOL! |

I think that the difference is that in Korea, everyone wants to be the brightest star in the sky, but in America everyone thinks they're already the brightest star in the sky.
Meh... you can't tell people how they should live their lives. I don't really care either way unless it means a long uncomfortable plane ride or being squashed beside some massive slab of 99% cellulite in a movie theater or something.
But I do think that a lot of this surgery is unhealthy and a waste of money... if these girls really want to look better why don't they just exercise more? They'd probably feel better that way as well... I mean, in the videos they don't look fat, but they also don't look healthy.
Doing whatever you want to yourself and then refusing to accept the consequences is just weak... |

That's the funny thing about the word generally . It doesn't mean that it is true in all senses. Obviously, certain people like body builders and pregnant women complicate the use of BMI as a gauge for healthy weight.
Can you explain why BMI is "total BS," preferably something more substantial than Schwarzenegger. |

I love how people keep saying that Korean girls are malnourished. Girls of that generation will probably live a lot longer than the same girls in the U.S.
Stop skirting the issue.
Americans are fat as f and need to eat a lot less.
Koreans are fine. Sure, it's good to eat a super balanced healthy diet. But it's definitely better to eat less than to overeat.
Why can't people just admit that America is a fat-ass gluttonous country with a serious food/diet epidemic? Everyone on here has an excuse for everything. |

| I won't argue that Westerners are overweight. And I don't think it's just chubby (okay, I'm fat phobic), but most Koreans, esp. women, are fatter than they look since what you see isn't hard muscle but fat. Many can't carry out even a small amount of physical exercise without become totally winded. They want to avoid the appearance of having a curving muscle in their thigh or calf so much that they would rather atrophy their muscles. I think that's just as gross as being fat. |

I think you definitely need to tell people in America to stop being so fat. It puts a tremendous burden on our health care system. Something needs to be done (systematically) to curb obesity. People need to be judged often. America has gone to crap because everyone thinks that their personal freedom is the most important thing in the universe.
Korean girls like to look good (to a fault), but really, they don't need to exercise more. People in Okinawa who routinely live beyond 100 don't do what we westerners consider "exercise". They're just active. The average Korean is much more physically active over the course of the day than the average American. The food is also much healthier here, overall.
And no, surgery is not a waste of money if it gets you further in life. It works in this society. |

True, but the average western girl who is not only big but muscular as well because she exercises without cutting down on calories is a lot worse. You might as well be dating a body builder with that kind of mass there. |

Ugh, name calling, really? Doesn't that violate TOS? Don't worry, I won't tattle on you. Your attempt at bullying is rather weak.
Anywho, I had a feeling that you would just link to something that says "pshh...that BMI thing is stupid." Guess what, I can also link to an article from NPR written a year and a half later (link here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2010/12/01/131735271/how-dangerous-is-being-fat-new-data-on-the-meaning-of-body-mass-index ).
I was hoping that you yourself would list a few reasons why BMI is unreliable. I already gave two examples (bodybuilders and pregnant women) where BMI is just too simple a tool. Never did I say that BMI is the best or only tool to assess a healthy weight.
No, I am not an expert on weight, but I do have a strong background in science. While I may not know everything about BMI, I am very good at learning about and interpreting data and conclusions. The reason that I brought up BMI when I was talking about Sam Soon is so that a layman could understand. I could have brought up SAD (Sagittal Abdominal Diameter), but then fewer people would have been on the same page.
So yes, like all tools, BMI is limited. That doesn't mean it should stay out of the tool kit. And no, I'm still not convinced that BMI is "total BS". |

I'd saying rolling your eyes is equivalent to calling someone a fatty. so you started it boyo.
and super lol. Not gonna waste my time justifying my use of the word total. |

Probably not, but it could be. Some people have weird builds...
I am 5'10 and about 160lbs. If I got down to 150 I'd be at my ideal weight. Most people assume I'm 175 or so right now... |

Don't you understand? Health is more than just diet. Regular activity is important. (exercise, whatever you want to call it, and it isn't necessarily going to the gym, but it can be). I know many Korean females who have VERY little physical activity. They are extraordinarily weak. The women I worked with at my previous kindy job struggled to carry two children's chairs.
Being overweight (not obese) and partaking in regular physical activity is much healthier than being slim and not having physical activity. Not to mention, watching the eating habits of many of the Korean women I know, they are probably not getting enough nutrients. |
