So, I've been offerered a job at a CDI branch. It seems there is more than a bit of criticism of this school but they seem to pay you fairly for your time, no? I've been offered 27 per hour so far and may be able to wring out a bit more. The general mood at the branch also seems good. There are several teachers on their 2nd contract which is always a good sign, no?

Advice?

CDI pulls all kinds of funny stuff.

Do they pay for your health insurance? - Probably not.

Do they pay for your apartment? - Probably not.

Do you have to work holidays and or weekends? - Probably.

Cameras in the classroom? - Absolutely.

Will they pay for your airfare home? - No.

I am curious why a long-termer such as yourself would even consider CDI.

Don't you wonder why they are hiring all the time?

I wouldn't work there. CDI is probably, after Wonderland, the most denigrated hagwon chain.

OP: Do you consider falsely reporting your employment status so as to avoid paying pension, health, the correct rate of taxes, and your airfare to be paying you fairly? If so, why?

Having Wednesdays off does not make up for going an entire year without a vacation.

Also, that pay rate comes out to about 2.6 million a month. If it's a standard CDI deal where you have to pay for the apartment, you're making 2.2-2.3 and not getting paid severance, pension, or health insurance. You might do well during intensives, but you'll be teaching 45 hours a week in doing so.

Well, I'm already in Korea and leaving a contract prematurely. This present contract has been a huge pain because of my utility bill and the fact that I chipped in on the key money... and the room has a 2 year lease. It's probably going to cost me more than I made at this present job in the end. It's freaking RIDICULOUS. Anyway, I need to save money and I was just home for a year. I came back to the ROK to bank cash and was doing fine with that until I got the $500 gas bill I've been complaining about on here.

So long as I get enough sleep, am paid well, and am not overly micro-managed I think I'll be OK.

Unless it's a unique CDI situation where you don't have to pay rent, you're really not being paid well at all. Even if you don't, you're still not getting paid particularly well, given the fact that you don't get pension or severance.
