If I can just make this person agree with me on a message board, all of the world's problems will be solved.
Must...keep...trying...never...stop...trying...
I must have missed that memo. |

This is very typical of Americans under the age of 25. It sure was true of me when I was 24, cocky, and new to Korea. I remember what a Catalan lawyer told me about young Americans: "They don't respect their elders." That's something I had to come to Korea to learn how to do. |
Yeah, but look on the bright side. Since she's chosen to ignore us, it'll be that much more gratifying when the flower of her youthful optimism is ground mercilessly into the spittle-soaked concrete. |
Aw. Koveras, I was trying to universalize a little bit to take the pressure off Marzipoo. I don't want to see her youthful optimism ground mercilessly! Just her naivete and over-confidence! |
Well, what's important is that something gets ground mercilessly. I think we can all agree on that. |

95% of female NETs will never have anything happen. 5% will. That's actually quite a few when you consider the numbers.
The important thing is how to prevent things and how to set up a network to get the cops working for you. Your neighborhood should have a local cop shop. Go there one time at first to see if you should "register your presence" or some such excuse to meet and greet your local cop. Go back there in a few days to have some sort of forum filled out. Then go back in a month for a fingerprint card to mail home or some suchness. Be smiling and happy.
Or you can go the shady route and make friends with mobsters. One female NET friend of mine has done it (and no she didn't have to sleep with all of them- many gangsters here are semi-legitimate members of the community whose kids go to college) Any random schmoe gives you a problem and maybe they can take care of it.
At the same time try to make friends with a few Koreans/Korean-Americans so that you have a support network to draw on if something happens.
Lastly, project power. There's a certain something you can see in a person who has resources to draw on. You see can see it when you look at foreigners working for major companies and in positions of power vs. say, your average NET. You can see in their face that if anything goes down, major discomfort for the offending party is a phone call away. It'll take time to build up that real network, but in the meantime if anything happens you can at least try to project such an attitude in the hope that it will make the other person back off. Instead of threatening to kick their butt, ask them what their name is or where they work (doesn't work with deranged homeless or psycho-pervert cabbie). If you really want to send a message ask them where their parents work and what they do. Seen some of my Korean friends do it, boy does that send people running.
Class trumps gender here. You take a poor man and a poor woman and the man will win. You take a rich woman vs. a poor man and that man is done for. Another reason not to dress like a slob. Looking like you have power (money) backing you up is better than any pepper spray. |

The point is to keep your wits about you like you already know how to do. One poster put it this way "All these horror stories you here never begin with 'So we were heading home from this Christian Rock Concert at 11 PM when...', typically they involve 'So I was in Itaewon, wasted and alone at 3AM, when...' "
. |
I am going to take exception to this part. I have know plenty of girls who have been minding their business and had weird stuff happen. Here are two examples I got right off the top of my head. One: My friend walking to E-mart at about 8:30 at night and had a man pull up in a car and whip his junk out for her. Another girl I know called me up at about 1 am because she woke up to a man standing over her bed in her locked apartment and wanted me to come over in case the dude returned. (she swears she locked the door). After that she invested in a dead bolt. My examples are anecdotal but I don't by the "well it usually happens to drunk girls who put themselves into bad situations" B.S. It sure helps not putting yourself in bad situations but you should keep your wits about you regardless. |
Actually my girlfriend had an incident walking to my apartment one night of a Korean guy whipping out his junk and "pleasuring himself" as he walked behind her. Luckily the cops were nearby so she took a picture and showed them. Of course, they didn't find him. |

I was raised to respect my elders. I'm American and I'm 25. If anything, I see the younger Koreans not respecting THEIR elders. Also, I did not respect ANYONE undeserving of it.
An asshole is an asshole, young or old. An ignorant person is ignorant, young or old. |

With all those numbers coming out of your ass, you should write for a Korean paper.
5% is too low. Even for actual peg-in-hole stranger danger rape, it's likely too low. 100% of foreign women who spend a year in Korea will be harrassed on the street. Physical harrassment (touching, grabbing, groping, or blocking the way) is incredibly common. I've had a drunk old man try to grab me and kiss me in broad daylight. Disgusting. As someone else mentioned, they think they have the right. |

If 5% is too low, which it might well be- I think 20% is probably a better number in retrospect, 100% is too high. For example, in my town, we've had one incident in my 2 years in my town with a harassed female NET and we've had our share of lookers.
Regardless the point I was trying to make was that probably nothing extreme is going to happen, I'm guessing if some guy tries to touch her it won't have been the first time. I mean we've all been to house parties and the club.....At the same time the blase attitude is a bit, optimistic. Odds are fine that nothing is going to happen. Odds are also pretty good that something will.
Too many people I know have had nothing happen. Too many people I know HAVE had something happen. Again, be prepared and keep your wits about you.
And again, be proactive in setting up your security. Make connections, get some people owing you favors or taking a genuine liking to you. It's not full proof. Look, you could be a millionaire carrying mace, a taser, AND packing heat, in the most liberal country in the world and something might still happen and the guy can get off on a technicality.
Or you could be some black guy sitting in jail because some white chick picked you out of a mugshot book 12 years ago. The "fairness" of the law is not always as "fair" as we think it is. |

I'm talking about both Americans and elders generally. Individual experiences may vary. Elders deserve deference, up to a point, of course. |

Actually my girlfriend told me that 25% of women in Korea have said they were physically harassed on the subway/bus/taxi. It was in the newspaper. |

You should know that doesn't make it true. And seeing ashow we're in Korea, it probably means it's false. |
