Any idea what the salary range is for the folks at Seoul National University (English language teachers)? Also, what is their accommodation like (faculty apartments, or student-like dorms)? And how much vacation time do they get each year (on average)?

From what I understand, SNU employs MA-level English faculty in at least three different departments: for-credit English courses, non-credit English courses, and test design (maybe more as well). They posted an ad for the test designer position a while back; the salary was around 2.8/month and housing was provided, but the job did not grant the vacation time that most uni instructors are used to.

Note: My information might not be current.

5 mill a month is just enough to kick you into a much worse tax bracket, if memory serves. That sucks.

Especially now after taxes went up.

Taxes are on a sliding scale aren't they? There aren't any brackets. on 5 mil you'd pay around 10%

I think we are all wrong.

With the ending of the tax break and addition of flat tax and foreign resident tax, I think it is at 16.5 percent for all foreigners. Sojukettle made a post about this which was correct.

Koreans earning between 46 and 88 million per year get taxed at 26 percent - up from 17 percent for Koreans making 12-46 mill.

Taxes went up substantally for foreigners this past year. I lost over a million won in return. Even still, it is the same flat rate for every foreigner, I guess?

Think there was a lot on this on the board a few years back. There was a big stink about SNU (the departmental program) cleaning house and slashing wages across the board.

So as far as I can remember, teachers in the department make around 2.5 and get housing (a small apartment/one room) on campus.

I do know a couple of people teaching at the hakwon on campus. They say they make more money than people in the department and have FAR fewer problems to deal with. By-and-large, they seem to like it there. They're busy, but they get paid well.

There are also people working in 'Teacher Training' in a different program at SNU. Given the nature of the work, they don't get the vacations provided by the departmental position, and from what I've heard, the pay isn't all too great.

For ANY job at SNU, you have to have at least your MA. I was just talking about this with my buddies who work there.

If you have a Ph.D., then you can go in as a visitor or tenure track. Your salary will depend on your experience, publications, and service. To get into SNU, you need a certain number of publication 'points', with different types of publications affording different point values. The Ph.D. alone is not enough.

That sounds like a hagwon job.

Nope, not the hakwon job type of thing. Just a desk job.

Generally if you make less than 100M KRW a year you should opt to get taxed as a Korean. If you make more than that than opt for the flat 15% tax rate for Foreigners.

One which pays like a hagwon, yet demands post-grad qualifications. Poor show, I'd say.
