IT was a colleague who came out with this over lunch the other day. I told him he hadn't been to many places then prompting 20 minutes of solid debate on why/why not Korea is boring.
I've only been here a short while. Was my colleague right? |

Seeing as how you rely on other peoples' opinions to form your own, I think that sauerkraut is better than kimchi. Now you think the same. |

When I hear this line, I feel like saying, "I don't blame you. If I didn't put forth any effort to learn to speak, understand, read, or write any Korean, I would be bored here too."
I also feel like saying, "I don't blame you. If I didn't put forth any effort to teach in an inspiring and creative way, I would be bored too." |

Boring?
Tough, yes. Difficult, yes. Tiring, definitely. Uncomfortable, perhaps.
But out of all that, I'm not sure if boring is an apt description of Korea.. :)

Learning Korean makes it easier to survive... but also more stressful. Especially if you put heaps of pressure on yourself. I think I'm in the same boat as you, Tomato. Not easy to drill a language like Korean into a brain wired for English.
But is Korea boring? It is certainly monocultural, although perhaps less so with every year. It's hard to find foreign restaurants and other aspects of non-Korean cultures.
Koreans also tend to whitewash over the trappings of their traditional culture, whether it's baduk (the black and white checkers game), or the traditional music and dance. Younger people find stuff like this utterly boring, but that's what a foreigner would want to see in an Asian country. |

Bored people are boring, anywhere you go. Buy into their lack of curiosity at your own risk. |

Word
If your friend is bored hes obviously a pretty nimble minded fellow. Korea never ceases to fry my box whether its just going for a long walk somewhere unexplored or trying a new meal that you can't pronounce or sucking the cultural secrets (there are many) out of your Korean friends, firing a dart at a map and jumping on a bus. I guess its dream of everyone to go and live on an alien planet for a few years...well we're living it.
And... soju is cheaper than water...assar |

You are one bitter alcoholic, man. I like you, but I'm getting tired of seeing your stupid posts actually. Get a grip on yourself. If you're going to drink, don't post. Everything you say sounds hopelessly moronic, desperate, dry. If you want to cheer up it's easy - take the patch, quit smoking, exercise, drink less often, quit your miserable job and start over. You can do it of you try. I've done it myself. It was hard but worth it. I felt 100% better and happier when I did. While I still drink, I don't blame everybody else for my own problems. What's wrong with you, man? |

You know what bores me? Assumptions about a person with little or no basis.
Yawn. |
