JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An explosion on or near a bus in Jerusalem on Wednesday caused dozens of casualties, police said.

Scores of ambulances converged on the area, near the central bus station and a city conference hall in a Jewish neighborhood of downtown Jerusalem.

The Mideast news world is abuzz with talk of a possible third intifada, with Al-Jazeera, Ha'aretz and the Guardian all quoting senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Ereka's accusation that "Israel is lighting matches" in Jerusalem.

After intermittent rioting, stone throwing and rubber bullets, Jordan has asked Israel to close the area around Haram al-Sharif to non-Muslims, which has been closed in the past when tensions were high. Though conditions aren't as bad as they could be, experts warn that stalled peace talks and lingering ire over January's Gaza War (complete with damning UN report) could be incubating another uprising. The timing could be better: the second, or Al-Aqsa Intifada (named for the mosque at the center of the current controversy) began nearly nine years ago to the day, and observant Jews are flocking to the nearby Western Wall for the festival of Sukkot.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) Palestinian rockets struck two cities deep in Israel on Wednesday, wounding a resident and prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to threaten lengthy "exchanges of blows" with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Islamic Jihad, a smaller Gaza faction and occasional Hamas ally, claimed responsibility for the attacks on Beersheba and Ashdod.

They followed Israeli air strikes and shelling in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday that killed four Palestinian civilians, including three children playing football, and five militants, medical officials said.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/03/13/west.bank.family.killed/index.html

Quote:
Five members of an Israeli family were killed in the West Bank early Saturday morning in what the Israeli military is calling a terror attack.

According to a military spokeswoman, an intruder entered the Israeli settlement of Itamar near the northern West Bank city of Nablus around 1 a.m., made his way into a family home and killed two parents and their three children. Speaking to reporters at the scene of the crime, the head of Israeli military central command, Maj. Gen. Avi Mizrachi, called the killings "a brutal terror attack" that "was perpetrated by cowardly murderers."

I assume that Hamas/Hezbollah see this as a useful time to start another war. The Arab world is in revolt and images of war in Gaza would may influence the protests.

I certainly hope not. There is enough going on. Things seem to be changing rapidly and maybe for the better. Stirring up Israel is not the thing to do. Unless there is an agenda here that is not obvious.

Uggh. It was so nice having the rest of the region in the news instead of these two for once. Oh well... Maybe the Palestinians have finally found a way around that security wall.

This is no coincidence. Iran has been inciting revolt on the Saudi periphery, from Bahrain to Yemen to Palestine.

Stratfor wrote:
The names of shadowy groups such as the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade-Imad Mughniyah also began circulating, raising suspicions of a stronger Hezbollah and by extension, Iranian link to Palestinian militancy. (Imad Mughniyah, one of Hezbollahs most notorious commanders, was killed in February 2008 in Damascus.) The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades-Imad Mughniyah group claimed the March 11 West Bank attack, which Hamas denied. Palestinian Islamic Jihads (PIJ) armed wing, the al-Quds Brigades, has meanwhile claimed responsibility for the recent rocket attacks launched from Gaza that targeted Ashkelon and Sderot. PIJ spokesman Abu Hamad said March 23 prior to the Jerusalem bus bombing that his group intends to begin targeting cities deep within Israeli territory as it enters a new phase of the resistance. This is notable, as PIJ, out of all the Palestinian militant groups, has the closest ties to Iran.

Another example of outside forces using the Palestinians as to further their own agenda, of course the Palestinians will suffer for this.

Then the mullahs can scream how cruel the Jews are. Sickening and tragic.

Well, its a proxy war from both sides. The Americans have Israel, the Iranians have Hezbollah (in Syria, I know) and the PIJ.

yeah! The Palestinians have few real friends. I agree about a proxy war but i also see this as Iran's way of having an empire of ideology without a real empire. It has worked fairly well. The movement to extend it into Bahrain is frightening. Turkey of course is pushing back and they are looking to gain influence in Palestine and Lebanon. I think many tend to see the U.s. as the major actor and forget regional power plays.

The Americans have Israel

Backwards.

As Israel entered the third week of its Gaza blitz, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert regaled a crowd in Ashkelon with an astonishing tale.

He had, said Olmert, whistled up George Bush, interrupted him in the middle of a speech and told him to instruct Condi Rice not to vote for a U.N. resolution Condi herself had written. Bush did as told, said Olmert.

The crowd loved it. Here is the background.

After intense negotiations with Britain and France, Secretary of State Rice had persuaded the Security Council to agree on a resolution calling for a cease-fire. But Olmert wanted more time to kill Hamas.

So, here, in Olmerts words, is what happened next.

In the night between Thursday and Friday, when the secretary of state wanted to lead the vote on a cease-fire at the Security Council, we did not want her to vote in favor.

I said, Get me President Bush on the phone. They said he was in the middle of giving a speech in Philadelphia. I said I didnt care. I need to talk to him now. He got off the podium and spoke to me.

According to Olmert, Bush was clueless.

He said: Listen. I dont know about it. I didnt see it. Im not familiar with the phrasing.

I told him the United States could not vote in favor. It cannot vote in favor of such a resolution. He immediately called the secretary of state and told her not to vote in favor.

She was left shamed. A resolution that she prepared and arranged, and in the end she did not vote in favor.

Come on Kuros.

Israel ready to react with 'great force': Netanyahu

By Dan de Luce (AFP) 6 hours ago

CAESAREA, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Friday that Israel is ready to act with "great force" in response to a spate of rocket fire by Gaza militants and a deadly bus bombing in Jerusalem.

Israel had been "subjected to bouts of terror and rocket attacks," Netanyahu told reporters before going into a meeting with Gates.

"We stand ready to act with great force and great determination to put a stop to it," he added, with police saying Israel had not been hit by any projectiles Friday morning.

Netanyahu said he had received a "very warm" telephone call from US President Barack Obama on Thursday expressing his condolences after the latest flare-up in violence.

"Any civilised society will not tolerate such wanton attacks on its civilians," he said.

Just what the world needs now.

Should Israel decide to attack Gaza (hopefully not as aggressively as last time) there will be an impact on the protests and anger in the surrounding Arab states. The language of demoracy could quickly be replaced with the language of solidarity.

The Israeli's have every right to protect their civilians. They should be measured and rational about it. If Obama has any influence, he should restrain the Israeli response. The region is unstable, the global economy is unstable.

Just very sad! I can understand the anger, but I think this is the wrong time to do this. What would be gained, very little. the Israelis will respond with their usual overkill. If patient the Palestinians could be the winners in the "Arab Spring" revolts. I also suspect this is an action of an outside force or false flag action by Israel.

C'mon. We're talking Ehud olmert. The arogant self-agrandizing clown who got pushed from office in a hail of corruption and biribery charges. The guy who had 3% approval ratings. Was and is very unpopular in Israel.

He hardly has a reputation for telling the truth.

This was likely just a story he embroidered to impress his home crowd...at a time when he was desperate to get his popularity back. Is it true? Both Israeli and white house spokespersons have denied it.

What we do know for a fact however... is that Bush was the one telling olmert what to do.

Olmert wanted to bomb Syria's wepons facility, Bush said no.
Olmert wanted to bomb Iran, Bush said no.

Israel planned a bombing raid on Iran's nuclear sites but backed down when it was told by George Bush he would not support it

hardly the tail-wagging the dog now, is it.

http://mondoweiss.net/2011/03/icg-warns-against-cast-lead-ii.html

Quote:
The International Crisis Group (ICG) issued a warning that the recent escalation of air strikes on Gaza and rocket attacks in Israel has created the conditions for a rapid deterioration toward the kind of clash to which neither side aspires, for which both [Israel and Hamas] have carefully prepared, and from which they will not retreat quickly.

...

Stage set for Operation Cast Lead II?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened that if the rocket attacks continueand Islamic Jihad has promised they willthere will be an even more painful military retaliation. While the assailants of the bus bombing in Jerusalemwhich killed one passenger and wounded dozensare still unknown, the attack added fuel to a fire already stoked by several months of airstrikes and rocket attacks. Tensions in the West Bank have also been extremely volatile in the wake of the murders of five family members in the Israeli settlement of Itamar. According to a UN report, there was already a "sharp increase" in settler violence in the days before the Itamar murders and the number of settler attacks on Palestinians continued to rise in its aftermath.

The already unstable world does not need another conflict.

It holds sway over Shi'a Iraq, so that's most of Mesopotamia, right there. If Bahrain falls, Saudi's East Coast has a great deal of Shi'a. That's where the oil is.

Its not an Empire, its a jihad state.
