My favorite line from the Kinsley piece...

The governments main function these days is writing checks to old people. These checks allow people to retire and pursue avocations such as going to Tea Party rallies.

And this anecdote...

Quote:
I like what theyre saying. Its common sense, a random man-in-the-crowd told a Los Angeles Times reporter at a big Tea Party rally. Then he added, Theyve got to focus on issues like keeping jobs here and lowering the cost of prescription drugs. These, of course, are projects that can be conducted only by Big Government. If the Tea Party Patriots ever developed a coherent platform or agenda, they would lose half their supporters.

IMO it isn't useful to see the TP as one group. The Sarah Palin wing are Bush dead-enders with the wind in their sails. They have no coherent worldview. They're very emotional.

The libertarian end are ripe for cooperation with people like you (progressives). Naomi Wolf has been doing excellent outreach to them in an attempt to build a anti-war bridge between progressives and libertarians. She has been on The Lew Rockwell Show, Anti-war radio and others. Progressive types need to stop calling them all names and work with the common ground.

The Tea Party may have run its course.

Poll shows more Americans have unfavorable view of the Tea Party

Quote:
According to the poll, 47 percent of Americans now have an unfavorable view of the Tea Party, as compared to 32 percent with a favorable one.

Reports of its death are premature.

Barney Frank made the point well last night. He pointed out the mistake people make when they think an election is just about the most recent one. Because we have different government officials elected with 2, 4, and 6 year terms, the winners of the most recent election have to share power with those elected 2 and 4 years previously.

So even if the poll is right that the TP is toast and TP representatives all go down to defeat in '12, those senators elected last time will be in office until '16.

Not only that, the 32% who still have a favorable view are all in the Republican party. How is a Republican of a different stripe going to get past them in the primary? Didn't I see something about the TP threatening Boehner with mass challenges in the primaries if a deal is struck on the budget?

Reports are that there were more press than protestors at the 'big' Tea Party thing in Washington today. It could be that their initial energy has been expended, but not their legislative oomph.

Since Madison, it has looked like the energy has shifted to the liberals. We'll begin to get some clarification on that on April 5 (Tuesday) when Wisconsin votes on their supreme court.

After you spend some time at a tea party event, THEN we'll listen. (Cue attempt at "funny" Stewart-like comeback.)
