One of my favourite middle school students asked me yesterday what a 'cerebal' meant. As my students often ask me random vocab words I didn't think much about it until she explained her friend was in a coma after a bad car accident. The friend was in the front seat and went through the window.
Just now I was crossing the road and their was a minor fender bender between a taxi and a car that was dropping off a young mum and her toddler. I saw the whole thing, including the lead up - another mum in the front of the car playing with her squirming toddler. The kid got thrown against the dash board, but the taxi wasn't going fast, so there was a minimum of damage, thankfully.
Honestly, when are people going to start strapping themselves and their kids into seatbelts?
It is such a needless waste of life and it is one thing that really pisses me off over here. I try not to let it get to me but people drive like idiots and don't wear seatbelts. It takes 10 seconds to strap your kid in ffs. 
I know, I know there's nothing I can do and it's not like back home...

| Yes, it angers me too. If an idiot wants to kill him/herself then great, one less idiot. But the real tradgedy is when one of these idiots kills an innocent bystander (which happens too often). Disgraceful driving behavior from some people here. It angers me greatly. |

Yep, it really really annoys me too, no excuse for it as well. God knows theres enough video and film footage available to easily sort out that problem. Korean drivers and scooter riders in general will take longer  |

| It's only a matter of time before some Korean company figures out some angle and markets child seats properly and then there will be a rush on Rilakkuma child seats or some crap like that. |

They just need to get their product shown on a couple of dramas. After seeing a "talent" or two strapping their kids into car seats, car seats will become the next must-have accessory among Korean moms. |

Like most of us, I was raised to always wear a seatbelt. My Korean friends have me put on a seatbelt in their car only if I am in the front seat, and comment if I don't have mine on before they have their belts on. However, if I am in the backseat, they don't check and they don't care. I always see them without their seatbelt when in the back seat of a car.
I once asked a student about why it is common in Korea to only wear seatbelts in the front seat. He told me it was because the front seat was not safe, but the backseat was "very safe so you don't need one." |

| I once saw a family of 5 (including a baby) riding a scooter. I kid you not. And not one helmet among them. This wasn't a quiet little side street either. |

I've heard this too and the stupidity of it makes me furious. One of the first things I remember learning in drivers ed is that you cannot be thrown forward in a car accident and still hold something in your arms. I clearly remember seeing a video of crash test dummies with arms and legs flying forward as the fake baby being held by one of them crashed into the windshield. I find it ridiculous that in Korea, adults with young children haven't learned the same basic safety rules that I learned as a 15-year-old kid in a high school class. Korea makes and exports cars and presumably has to comply with the safety standards of the countries it markets too. How is it that basic driver and passenger safety seems to be completely unknown here? |

Will that be before or after they start enforcing people to stop at red lights or to not drive on the sidewalk?

I've seen three HS students riding around the highway on a Yamuda with nothing but t-shirts, shorts and sandals. |

I haven't heard that one before. I was told once that chopsticks are more civilized since a fork is used to 'stab' the meat instead of gently picking it up. Too bad they gently pick it up and yam it into their mouth smacking pie hole!
I have a car and a 3 year old. Costco has booster seats for $50. Very good quality and not a bad price. |
