I plan on starting in Gangnam in June. I've been to Korea before but wasn't on any particular diet, but now I'm doing the Paleo diet (aka Caveman diet or Hunter-Gatherer diet). I was wondering if anyone else is doing it, and what is your success? I've found that grains HURT my stomach terribly, which would include rice, and I know how hard it is going to be to avoid that. I can already imagine the looks I'm going to get when I tell them I don't eat rice. I'm considering getting used to eating rice again, just for convenience's sake.
Anyone, are you able to stick to the diet pretty well? I remember there weren't too many fruits available, which is unfortunate because I LOVE fruits. I'll be in Gangnam and I remember there's a costco somewhere nearby, so I imagine if I try real hard I'll be able to manage. Thanks for your input. |

I found it to be pretty difficult, personally. Decent results if you can stick to it, but almost impossible to do so. Sure, you can go out and get 삼겹살 with all the fixins minus the rice, and be pretty satisfied afterwards, but sooner or later you're gonna get sick of doing that.
I've tried the no carbs thing, and I've tried just limiting meal sizes, both with the same rate of weight loss success: about 2 lbs. / week loss. |

How many dishes in Korea actually *require* the consumption of rice?
burnt rice soup
fried rice dishes
bibimbap
kimbap
No *grains* is of course a little harder. Noodles make it into practically everything. |

I've been eating this way lately and find it surprisingly easy to do in Korea. Cooking at home is no problem. Grilled meat and veggie side dishes are an easy choice for going out with friends. If you need a quick meal or a cheap lunch, just order almost any soup. If it's a soup normally served with rice inside, ask for it 따로 (ddaro, means seperate, as in rice on the side).
There's also a great 고갈비 place in my neighborhood. 6,000 gets you a grilled fish, rice, and a bunch of side dishes. Just don't eat the rice. |

Just recently came back to Korea after an extended break (5 months) in America. I started doing it about 3 months ago. I love it. I have definitely seen results and have not had a health issues.
I do cheat from time to time, but not with anything terrible. Some alcohol, dairy, or potatoes. I don't like rice or pasta so the difficult part for me is beer and ice cream. Pizza I guess too.....oh man pizza.
Good luck. And if you'd like to compare notes or what you're eating pm me. |

I appreciate everyone's input, it looks like if I try hard enough I'll be able to do it. I've been doing this diet for the last 3 months in America and it's really pretty easy to do. Or rather, it's easy to acquire the necessary foods, but training your taste buds to crave fruit instead of ice cream is difficult. On this diet it's necessary to avoid eating out, so I'm already of that mindset and plan to cook most of my meals.
For anyone who's interested in more (There are over 200 hits on this thread at the time of this writing, but only 5 responses, which means people are interested), go to freetheanimal [dot] com/fat-loss-techniques. That site is a wealth of information, and that link was the first thing I saw that was mostly about diet. |

I'm disappointed in the lack of humorous replies.
Surely there should have been some sort of Geico reference by now. |

I'm on the Paleo diet and have been for the past 7 years. It is the only thing that cured my acne completely (acne that was not cured by any dermatologist or even dangerous medications like Accutane) along with a few other digestive issues for me.
I eat polished white rice like Koreans eat though. It doesn't have any of the big no-nos in it like lectins which cross the endothelial lining of the gut and enter into the bloodstream to cause an immune reaction. Nor does it have phytates which inhibit nutrient absorbtion (but it also barely has any nutrients). My opinion is that rice shouldn't actually hurt your stomach, the only reason not to include it is if you have blood sugar issues like diabetes, are overweight, or are st | | |
