hello
I was going to Japan for a visa run/ short vacation but after current events I am thinking about changing my flight to somewhere else while the country deals with the aftermath
I am open to ideas. I have around 5 days |

Taiwan is beautiful this time of year. There are plenty of direct flights from Seoul to Taipei. You can spend a few days in Taipei and explore the night markets, museums and memorials. There is a great network of buses and trains, so getting around the country is fairly easy and inexpensive. If you do not want to stay in the city the whole time, I'd recommend the east coast versus the west coast. The east coast is significantly less populated versus the more industrial west coast. The whole eastern coast is beautiful with lots of hiking, great beaches and hot springs. Getting to Yilan, the closest major city on the east coast to Taipei, is very easy by bus. I lived in the area for a year and was always amazed that more people didn't visit. |

Fukuoka on Kyushu was totally unaffected & is the usual visa run location. Nagasaki is a short train ride away. There's a permanent sticky if you search for it. |

Hong Kong is great too. It's a bit on the expensive side, but there is tons to do. I spent a long weekend there and was never bored, just a little broke by the end. There is a lot of history, shopping and great food. Macau is only an hour ferry ride away, so if you are a passport stamp collector, it is like a 2 for 1 if you go to Hong Kong. Both Taiwan and Hong Kong are great options and I would recommend going to both at some point. |

You could always go to Cebu, Philippines. It will cost you a little more to get there, but you will spend much less once you're on the ground. |

I think this may have just changed. Mount Shinmoedake about 200km south of Fukuoka just erupted. Flights are canceled to Fukuoka right now. Will Japan get a break?? |

Crap. I've got tickets to Hiroshima at the end of the month. Hope they stay open for business there.. I'm on a tourist visa and need to leave the day of my ticket. |

I'm in Osaka, also completely unaffected. I think most people in Korea either fly to Kansai or Kyushu. Both are fine. |

Fukuoka isn't a huge city like Osaka or Tokyo, but worth a few days exploring. There is also the convenience of taking the train down to Nagasaki from Fukuoka. In Fukuoka, you have the Tenjin and Hakata areas to explore, which are nice. |

Hi Tiger Beer,
Were you in Japan for your E-2 Visa? If so could you please post the aprox cost, including flight, hotel, and the cost of the visa itself? Any relevant advice would be appreciated from an ole timer like yourself? ^^
Thanks ahead of time,

I live in Osaka
Not sure about recent flights, hotels, etc. hostelworld.com might be good for hotels and hostels though, with prices, and you can book beforehand. |
