Hi I thought I'd jump on the E2 visa transfer band wagon. I'm one of the teachers affected by the GEPIK freeze on contract renewals. My public school contract is up on May 30th and I am having to look for a new job as GEPIK won't allow my school to renew my contract. I've been told I should be able to transfer my E2 visa to another school but I'm confused about what I need and whether I will be able to go home for 2-3 weeks between contracts without having to get all the visa docs all over again.

My ARC card actually expires on May 28th so I guess I will have to get it extended to cover the rest of my current contract anyway. Can I go back home between contracts and start a new job at a new school say in mid June and transfer my visa? Do I need to do a visa run? As my ARC will probably expire pretty much as soon as my current contract ends will I have to just start a new job straight away. Thanks in advance for your help on this.

contract expires May 30 and ARC expires May 29. The extension is your 1st change of status since 2012 - no new documents required.

Transfer AFTER the change of status means it is your 2nd change. IF you are in the group of people who need to update their documents then it will be required for this change. (calll Kimmi to confirm whether or not you will need to do the update).

It has NOTHING to do with your vacation home.

If your ARC expires you will have to start all over again from the beginning with a new document set.

Thanks ttompatz. Does that mean I need to do the transfer before my ARC expires after I've extended it?

I'm from the UK and assume I probably don't need to update my docs as I don't think there have been any changes for us. So I will have to extend my ARC to complete my current contract presumably. Even though it's only 1-2 days. But in order not to have to get all new docs for a new school I'll need to sort the transfer out before my ARC expires i.e. before the end of my current contract? Is that right? Can I do that?

Sorry if these questions are stupid I'm just finding all of this very confusing. Really wish GEPIK would just let us renew our contracts like we and our schools wanted us to. Sad

ttompatz, I have a question similar to what Sophos asked.

I have a new job lined up, starting two weeks after my current contract ends. Due to how long it takes to get a visa issuance number, I won't have time to get a whole new visa, so I want to transfer. However, my new employer is saying that I can only transfer if my new job starts exactly 1 day after the current job. My ARC expires on the same day as the end of my current contract.

I thought you said that one could transfer if there were up to 30 days between contracts. Is this right?

Also, will I need a LOR from my current employer, even though I'm completing my contract? The Immigration website said I needed the LOR, but maybe they meant if I was quitting mid-contract, which I'm not.

Thanks!

Christ alive I have a similar issue:

Contract ends July 30th this is my FIRST time here in Korea.

I have an apostilled CBC that will expire in roughly 2 months now.

I was told by a worknplay recruiter that to renew my visa I need to get a new cbc as it won't be valid for August?!

I thought you could renew your visa no problem if it was your first entrance into Korea?!

I have a similar question ttompatz. My contract expires on September 14th, but my new job doesn't start until Oct 28th. Is there any way to do a visa transfer in that time period? as my ARC and Visa don't actually expire until Oct 14th. Thanks.

I keep hearing different things but the immigration rules feel like they change on a 6 month basis, and I'm not even sure Immigration itself knows what its doing sometimes.

I just renewed at my PS(& K-immi) for another year but found out my main co-teach is leaving. I'm hoping for the best but want to prepare for the worst (new working environment) in their absence. What documents will I need to transfer jobs after giving 30 days notice? (Is it simply a transfer of my current Visa[E-2] or will I need to produce fresh copies of certain docs) Most likely to a hagwon. tanks.

This is an older thread, but what I heard when I went down to immigration last week is that if you've had an E2 before, as long as you do not leave the country for more than three months you will not need a new CBC when finding a new job within that time period. (Presumably you'll have to do whatever else you need for the process - visa runs, application, employer info, etc - but if this is true then no new CBC will be needed).

I called the hotline today to double check and while the guy didn't seem to know what I was talking about at first, when I told him what I heard from the Seoul immigration office he said their info would be more up to date.

So for people who have new jobs starting soon but not soon enough to transfer this could be good news. Personally I ordered another check just to be on the safe side, but this is at least a little reassuring as I'm not sure if I'll find work in time to transfer (My contract ends October 1st). Has anyone else been told something similar?

could someone clarify what immigration mandates as far as the end date of the existing contract and the start date of the new contract you hope to transfer to?

for example; if my current job's final day and the day on my letter of release is the 2nd of september, and my new contract starts on the 5th, is that permissible?!

*Bump*

So I am just checking if I change schools, do I need the letter of release? My school and I are on good terms at the moment. However, I have not decided whether I want to renew or not as I have an interview with another school. I talked to a co-teacher and it turns out she is leaving the school the same time I am so they may not be happy about it (just checking in case my school makes a fuss...although they shouldn't as I have been there for more than one contract with no problems)

I have all my documents such as the background check and degree. Will I need to do a visa run if I cannot get the LOR?

Is there an official document/form for the letter of release or is it just a letter from the school saying we are on good terms and they are okay with a visa transfer?

Sorry just a bit confused about this whole process since I have only renewed in the past.

Thanks!

End of contract = you do NOT need a LOR.

Mid contract = you do need to be released by your employer.

Your options at the end of contract are:
i) leave Korea
ii) if you have a new job lined up - transfer
iii) no job and wanting to stay = change to a D10 (looking for work) visa.
This allows you up to 6 months to find a new employer and switch back to an E2 without the need for a visa run or new documents.

Transfer to a new job - any time within the last 7 days of your contract and must be within 30 days of the end of your contract to complete the paperwork.

Switching to a D10 - any time before your ARC expires and within 30 days after the end of your contract.

Sorry for the somewhat dumb question, but how do you prove that your last contract is finished? Show them your copy of the contract, or do they just have it on file? Is it as simple as the date on your ARC card less 30 days?

My boss is being a real dick about giving me a letter of release, even though my contract will be up, so it would be great if I didn't need one.
