First one: a young boy and his sister are stranded in the outback when their father commits suicide in the car; they then start out on foot to get back to civilization; are terrorized/befriended by aborigines along the way

Second one: a young school teacher contracts to go and teach at a public school in a small outback mining town; is very unhappy there and more or less sells his soul to the devil (as I recall)
