Hi there!

I'm a big fan of American Rye Whiskey... and am having trouble tracking it down here. Any of you out there know where I can find it? I just went home and realized it would make this next year oh so much more delicious!

I'm hoping for Sazerac, or something comperable.

Also, has anyone found a good whiskey bars in Korea (preferably with ambitious cocktails?)

Thanks all!

Any imported spirits gets taxed 130% of its acquisition cost. Hence $100/bottle whiskey has to be sold for higher than Won equivalent of $230/bottle, if you further count in VAT, handling, storage, and operation margin of liquor stores. American whiskey in general you might be able to find would probably be limited to Jim Beam (B/W), Jack Daniel's, Wild Turkey, Maker's Mark, and very rarely Woodford Reserve. If you narrow it down to rye whiskey in particular, your chance of finding one becomes even slimmer.

Bottom line: your best bet getting rye whiskey is, naturally, duty-free shops unless you're bringing in a bottle from home, not just for the price but for availability. You may find several whiskey bars in Korea, some very nice ones, but also expect to see the price tag 3~4 times the retail price.

I know you said "American Rye" but you could also search for "Canadian Whiskey" which is also Rye, ie Canadian Club, not sure how much luck you'll have though...

You can find Canadian Club in Korean liquor stores but it's pricey. Last time I saw it on sale for 38000 won for a liter.

American Rye is not so easy to find and I'm not sure why.

Koreans are big scotch drinkers so you won't find much else than that.

Club Trance in Itaewon always has a really good selection of rye on hand. The last time I was in they had Rittenhouse, Pikesville Supreme, as well as some corn and wheat whiskey. From the Itaewon subway station, take exit #3 and walk straight ahead one block and make a right, then take the 2nd left. You'll see a sign for Trance on the left side of this uphill lane about half a block up. Take the stairway down to the basement.

Thanks all!

I will definitely check out Club Trance next time I'm in Itaewon!
Does anyone know if there's any speakeasy/ revival bars in Seoul? It would be cool to find someplace with low lights and ambitious cocktails outside of th weekend meatmarket that Itaewon becomes Confused

The difference between Canadian Rye and American Rye is that American Rye has to be made with 51% or more rye.... while Canadian Rye just has to be rye flavored.

Very true

You're right about the 51+% rye mash requirement for rye labelling in the US; in Canada there is no such requirement. Though technically the whiskey's that people call Canadian 'rye' aren't labelled as such, they are simply labelled Canadian Whisky (or Canadian Blended Whisky), and it's a misnomer when people call them rye.

If you're truly in the mood for a good rye whiskey most Canadian whisky's just aren't going to cut it. And as far as I'm concerned anyone who thinks Canada Club is a good whisky is out of their goddamned mind. Crown Royal is pretty good though. Wish I could find Alberta Premium here, now that's a good, Canadian rye whisky made from a 100% rye mash.
