| There are no gays in Korea. |
After nigh on 5 years in Korea, the only people I've ever heard this phrase from are foreigners. |
really? I have never heard a foreigner say this...
At the first school I worked at here, the boss and all of the Korean teachers INSISTED that there were absolutely no gay Korean people. It was absolutely absurd.
Near the end of my contract I invited a friend, who just happened to be the elusive gay korean, of mine out to dinner with the school. The crap really hit the fan, and IMO hilarity ensued.
Since then, I have heard half a dozen korean people insist to no end that there are no gay people in korea.
However, this is not really a korean thing, it is a bible-bashing Christian thing. |

I've never heard anyone use the word 'nigh' before. I thought that word was just for Christmas Carols. |

Ok, I can believe that it would be said by the bible-basher types. And as you rightly point out, it's probably not exclusive to Korea. I've never really spent a great deal of time with those kind of people though, which may be why I've never heard it. It's certainly been dealt with in a number of Korean dramas and movies, in fact it seems to be a somewhat fashionable storyline days. My adult students enjoyed learning about 'gay-dars' and even put them to the test!

My original point was that the only time I hear it is when it is said by foreigners, who assume that this is what ALL Korean people think. |

| What? You'd rather teachers clamp down on the only time during school hours students can just go wild? I think it's great they're allowed to scream at the top of their lungs. |

| I have no real objection to children running and laughing in the hallway. Children should be happy. I'm no grinch. But I draw the line at extreme yelling in the hallway. It's not acceptable in a school. Save the bellowing until lunchtime and you can scream to your heart's content on the playground. But once you are in the school there are rules that children must abide by. Pretty much near the top is the 'no screaming at the top of your lungs' rule. |
