*I hope it's OK that I posted in this thread. I thought it better than starting a new thread on the same topic.
Hello everyone,
This is my first post on these forums. I had seen this site before but never joined until now. Over the weekend my laptop mysteriously decided to stop working shortly after a friend spilled beer on it. (Party for a friend returning to S.Korea from the U.S.) I wasn't terribly upset as I needed to upgrade.
I want to get a great gaming machine, along with being able to handle editing DSLR hd footage and some work in Maya. I'll want to make use of CUDA.
After reading this, and other threads / reviews I decided that I want to go with the following options:
i7 2600
MSI P67A-GD65 B3 Intel P67 Motherboard
Corsair CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 Vengeance 16GB PC12800 DDR3 RAM - 1600MHz, 4x4096MB, Non-ECC, Unbuffered
VGA 03G-P3-1598-AR GeForce GTX 590 CLASSIFIED Limited Edition Video Card - 3GB
2 X Crucial C300 128GB 2.5 SATA Solid State Drive
TigerDirect.Ca Total: $2,093.89
I can go up to the $2500 / $3000 CAN range. I will be ordering a 2nd video card down the road. I have a monitor already. So, if you don't mind me asking for your help...
1) What are your opinions on this set up?
2) What do you suggest I get to complete it? (PSU, Fans, Box)
3) Can I order all of these parts from tigerdirct.ca without any further expense or hassle? I'll be ordering using AMEX with my Canadian address and I've had trouble with making purchases from Korea before. Will I get a hassle at the Korean border? I could probably get it sent to my buddy who lives on a US base if that is any help.
I will go pay cash for a nice case and aftermarket fans here. I figure a case would be too big / heavy to ship. So what I need to order are the main components to get my new machine up and running.
I want the two SDD to run in a RAID set up for video editing. One as boot drive and one for raw video footage, then my e-sata or HDD for source audio while editing in Premiere. I will have to buy a 7200rpm HDD for regular storage drive as well. (Not sure if I have to set up my SDD as RAID 0 for optimal editing. Will be reading up on that more when the time comes).
I'll be using the new machine for 3D apps, mostly Maya at this point as I'm starting out on digitaltutors.com to learn it from scratch after having taken a course on Softimage back in 2005. I won't be doing anything super taxing that would require a Quadro, so gaming specs are more important as far as graphics cards are concerned.

So, you want a top spec PC........you're in the right place!
You would probably save as much as 20% if you buy in North America......the kind of high-end stuff you want is overpriced in Korea.
I know people who have brought a suitcase full of components through customs with no bother.....of course, they didn't declare!!
On the downside, you might have a lot of hassle if any components fail and you want to return stuff from Korea.
The spec list you suggest will handle any current computing job with ease.......in fact, you could save a little money and get the Intel 2500k and just one SSD for OS/software and then two big HDD's for storage. The newer HDD's can handle video editing easily. |

Perfect post for this forum. Why not upgrade to a 2600K, it's like a few bucks more and overclockable.
Your price range makes room for quite a sexy beast. |

Or a 2500k which is around 259,000 and easily overclocked. |

Hey guys!
Thanks for responding. I meant to write that I will be getting the 2600k. Truth be told, I really had no idea about mobo's, processors or any of thew new equipment. I was considering getting a new iMac but with my recently renewed interest in FSX I thought I should stop being so ignorant and try to see if I can sort through all of the PC options.
I typed in something along the lines of 'buying gaming pc in korea' and stumbled on to this thread and that is what set me off in the right direction. I feel really lucky that I can throw this much towards a machine, but I do use it to make money with editing and will be progressing with Maya. So that justifies the expense, right?
I just got off the phone with a great rep from tiger direct. I mentioned that I have a buddy living on a US base and he said that is the best option. Since I won't be using my Canadian address I'll be saving on price AND taxes, and if I ship to the APO address on the base I can get fast delivery and avoid any hassles. So I'm basically buying my friend a computer and sending it to him. The TigerDirect guy, Leo, told me it's really common. People in Iraq and Afghanistan order tons of stuff from them. Just nothing large like a TV or something.
So that makes me happy.
I've since added to the list:
Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gbs
Win7 Ultimate 64bit
So do you have any suggestions on what I would need for a PSU? Are they generally heavy (in my head they seem like they should be heavy) so it'd be better to buy here in Korea?
I think I'd like to go with the Cooler Master HAF 932 Advance Full Tower case. My understanding is that it is heavy and would cost too much to ship. Can I find that here for a decent price?
I'd like to thank you guys again. As I said I based a lot of my decisions on what I learned reading through this thread.

Having everything sent to an on-base friend sounds like a great option.....wish I had an on-base friend!!
That Coolermaster case is exceptionally good. Safe buy.
PSU? How about this Seasonic 750w?
http://blog.danawa.com/prod/?prod_c=988724&cate_c1=861&cate_c2=880&cate_c3=997&cate_c4=0
Seasonic are consistently rated highly by PC users and experts alike.
Whatever PSU you choose I think you'll need no less than 700w for this build. |

Yeah, I think you mentioned you might SLI in the future, make sure you have headroom for that when it comes to your psu. |

I've watched a couple of vids on the Coolermaster case and I think it looks perfect.
I do want to make sure I can run a 2nd Geforce 590 and some aftermarket fans, but I am kinda lost when it comes to power. Do you think 750 would cut it? I can go higher than I need for now without any harm to the Mobo, right?
I just sent my friend a text regarding shipping to the base. Who knows when he'll be able to get back to me. If he said it's all good then I'd call back Leo at TigerDirect and just tell him to send it.
I guess I'll have to learn to play FPS with mouse and keyboard. I have NEVER played a FPS on a computer before. Sure, I've toyed around with it, but have always been a console gamer. |

Try this for power requirement:
These are only 'certified' psu's
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html
It was the opposite for me. Started with a NES, SNES, Genesis, PS, now I'm a devoted PC gamer. Aside from my DS, which replaced my American reading material. |

Oh, and it doesn't matter what the power limit is, it will not hurt your motherboard.
But, the quality of the psu can affect the operation of your whole computer.
I left a Q6600 rig in the states. It's had probs for about a year, kept on blue screening, and I was always helping everyone with their comp probs that I loathed fixing my own stuff. Well, I tested some of the components and never solved the problem. 6 months after that in Korea, I've finally decided that it was a faulty 750W Eagle Psu I got for $10 after mail in rebate a while back! |

No, cutting it too close. Two 590's damn.. 850w at least. More if you going to overclock everything. |

I don't want to spend more money, but just as nuggets suggested I'd like to make sure I have some overhead for the future. So the 850w Seasonic might be a good deal eh?
The box and the PSU are thing I have to pay with cash at Yongsan. I don't want to go super cheap on the PSU for obvious reasons, but don't wanna spend more then I absolutely need to kinda thing. I need some money left for beer!
Thanks for giving me some options to look at. I'll definitely keep you guys posted.

Ok, so I should go up to 1000w then?
If price is going to be too much here then I might as well just order it with everything else. The heaviest thing is going to be the video card at 12.75 lbs, and the Cooler Master Silent Pro M 1002 PSU is 8.55. I'll see what the difference is with shipping and compare it to buying here. Then buy the case here.
Should I go with that PSU:

If you're definitely thinking of 590's in SLI, then yeah, you might want as much as a 1000w to give yourself plenty of headroom.......850w would probably be enough though. |
