I'm gonna have to say that living here is definitely not boring ... but I would never reccomend this as a a hot tourist place. I've had numerous people from back home say they want to come visit me and wonder how much time they should set aside to do "touristy" stuff. Sadly, I tell them you can do anything important in Korea within 3 or 4 days (at most). I'm sorry, but so many of the temples/palaces here are so reconstructed that after seeing one, they all look the same. Sure, there are a few cool things to say , but after a while it gets a bit repetitive.
Seriously, Korea, a blast to live in ... but not an exciting vacation spot |

When I first started coming here I couldn't work out what to do with my free time and would spend weekends doing very little.
Now though, there just aren't enough hours in the day- so I agree it's not much of a tourist spot but if you've got the right situation it can be a great place to live. |

I'll be the first one to admit that I don't speak Korean. I'll be the first one to admit that the culture doesn't grab me. I'll be the first one to admit that I'm staying here for one year and then going.
And I'll be the first one to admit that Korea IS boring.
This country is like a zoo with one animal. Everywhere you look - Korean, Korean, Korean. And not only do they look the same, but they tend to think the same. I'm sorry, but that's not interesting at all. And I don't care how much Korean I learn, or how many Korean friends I make, that's not going to change.
Say it with me... a zoo with one animal. "Mom, can we go home now?"
And as for the person who was dissing Canada, go to Montreal, pal. You don't have to travel the world when you live there, the world travels to you. Maybe my thought is too coloured because I come from there. It's what I'm used to. A multi-cultural, bilingual, do-anything-you-want party town.

imagine going to a zoo where you could speak to the animals? Wouldn't that be a lot better? |

The point is that the country is 95% one nationality and one culture. That's why I don't think it's interesting. Language is irrelevant. |

IT was a colleague who came out with this over lunch the other day. I told him he hadn't been to many places then prompting 20 minutes of solid debate on why/why not Korea is boring.
I've only been here a short while. Was my colleague right? |
Is your colleague on smack? |

Maybe the problem is that your friend is still listening to Koreans about how to spend his free time.
If I accepted every offer to spend a day at Koreas most beautiful ______ (fill in with your choice of mind numbing places) I would think Korea was boring as well. You usually end up sitting in traffic for four hours and then walking around some over crowded disappointment of a destination. Only to end up sitting around for hours drinking soju or singing in a darkened, smelly little room.
Koreans have a different idea about fun and excitement. Its not that hard to find it for yourself, just get out and do something.
Maybe you also have to remind your friend that hes not going to find excitement by sitting in a bar every weekend b*tching about Korea. Too many fall into this trap. Im not saying that drinking in a bar is bad, quite the opposite. Youre just not going find any country exciting if you just watch it pass by the bar window. |

I always love reading this complaint. Say it with me....THIS IS KOREA
What else were you expecting to find here? And for the record I'll put in for Seoul being at least as good a party town as Montreal, having lived in both.
Where is this week's "I'm back home now it's boring as hell" thread? There's usually one around... |
