|
|
This is my third year at my current GEPIK school. The previous years I belive the maximum teaching hours were 22. It seems this year however they want teachers to teach for 22 hours.
I've been teaching 19 and my school doesn't really need me to teach 22. However my coteacher told me on Monday that were was a meeting between the district coordinator and coteachers who take care of the native speakers at their school. Supposedly people from GEPIK were saying that if the teachers aren't teaching 22 hours at their respective school, then the school isn't in need of a native teacher or something.
Anyone heard something like this?
Anyone had their hours increased? |

I believe you're slightly wrong. You're contracted to "teach" 22 "hours". Anything more than that is overtime. Anything less than that is up to your school. So 22 isnt the maximum....its technically the minimum that you are supposed to do.
I am scheduled for 22 hours, but usually only teach 21 hours because my teachers and school parents are too busy for their English class.
With GEPIK making major cutbacks....they would probably rather spend their money on a school that needs 22+ hours of teaching. |

Oh no! How terrible, we all must work 22 grueling hours a week .
This is almost as bad as having to go out to free dinners with coworkers or getting paid to sit at a desk when students aren't there. |

Don't belittle teaching 22 hours. There's also lesson planning and prep time. It's a full schedule.

Up to their usual tricks of making things as hard as possible for the foreign teachers. |

22 hours is a pretty full load. Especially so if you also teach after school.
I don't buy the "they're out to get the foreign teachers" theory though. In a period of budget cutbacks and decisions it makes perfect sense for them to maximize their value for the money. I heard talk going around last year that they wouldn't budget NET's who didn't have a full 22 hour workload. Thankfully this didn't affect me, but it makes sense on their end.
re free dinners with teachers hanguk, feel free to attend any of mine in my place (for free!) If you like sitting on the floor in a very uncomfortable lotus position and eating fish based foods and white rice then you'll be in heaven. As for me, I'll take my far more delicious and nutritious dinner made at home.
Those dinners always screw up my post school schedule and I'm not interested in getting drunk (which is the point for most Korean males that attend). |

Yes, a full load, but not an excessive one. Less than 22 hours is light. If you're doing after school, you're getting paid OT.
Thanks for the invite. I love fish and rice! |

22/week is pretty high for my job. I currently teach 21, but my contract is for about 16/week (69/month) with maximum class sizes of 12 students. Lots of OT for me.
I couldn't imagine teaching at a public school in Korea. The thought of it makes me shiver. |

all the fish and rice and soju you want is yours. Also, for some people the free time post school is more valuable than the 20K won.
if you have to make lessons from scratch without any curriculum etc you need the time for lesson planning/creating from scratch.
I like to think if it in the following manner. My school is getting 22 hours of quality teaching packed into less, meaning each of my current hours is of higher quality than it would've been otherwise.
it's simple math really. You only have so much energy and quality to give.
