Hello All!
Planning my adventure to teach in Asia, and have a few questions I hope you can help with:
1) What is the Korean school calendar like? (Semester starts/ ends, the longer breaks, etc.)
2) Obviously there are jobs available all the time, but are certain times more prime than others? Any time it is tough(er)?
3) Most postings are the "generic" package- pay, housing, flight, bonus.
Is it possible to find shorter term work than a year contract? Is this legal/ how would visas work in this case?
4) What is the quality of employer provided housing generally like? Is it possible to get more $ instead and find your own accom.?

Hmmm...yeah.
I'm glad that you're looking forward to your adventure. Never mind the actual JOB that goes along with it. Never mind the weight that the word 'Teacher" holds. Never mind any of that let's answer your questions:
1. Hogwans don't run on a typical school calendar. They are open for the majority of the year.
Public school years start in March with a break in the summer and winter.
2. If you want public there two main hiring times: One for March and the Other for August.
Hogwan's replace teachers all the time.
3. Hmmm sounds like you want to spend some time TRAVELING; a fine activity for a TEACHER. E-2 visas are for a year but you can make arrangements with a boss about ending it early. (This wont fly in public schools)
4. Hmmm...more money huh? Not worried about the quality of the texts used in class or the workings of a curriculum? You'll fit in fine here.
Housing is a crapshoot. Plain and simple it's based on luck.
When are you going to start you web blog? I can't wait to hear about you impressions on your KOREAN ADVENTURE. |

I'm sorry if I offended you, just trying to gain knowledge as I figure this all out.
The extra $ question was about quality of housing- professional support is of great importance to me, but those are questions for job search/ interviews- I'm not there yet.
Please don't think I take the job/ responsibility lightly. Teaching is something I have considered for many years, and at this point in my life I'm ready for a career change- seems like the right direction for me. |
