I've been told that some places in Korea sell good beer. The name that keeps reoccurring is "Alley Cat". Does anyone know about this beer and if you can buy it in Gangwon Do? |

I don't know about Gangwon-do, but a few bars in Seoul have it on tap. Mike's Cabin and the Wolfhound are two that immediately come to mind. Pretty good stuff, especially compared with Cass/Hite. |

Yeah I knew there were a few in Seoul, I was just hoping for something around the home turf. |

I'm pretty sure they don't bottle it. Alley Cat reminds me of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. |

I'm in Chuncheon and I actually went to the brewery in Cheongpyeong one day-- got a few free samples and was told that they sell it at one place in Chuncheon called, shockingly, "The Place" for about 6-7,000 won/bottle. Never went there, but it's on the main bar street of Kangdae, but across the parallel street that runs up the hill towards Kangdae Hospital (on the 'dead' part of the street, away from the back gate area). It's on your right hand side as you're walking down the street on top of a Japanese sushi place.... |

Every time I've had the misfortune to drink this it tastes like it's got washing-up liquid in it...I'd rather have Hite!! |

Yeah, I wish they would just sell it in bottles. alley cat has been both the best and worst beer i've had in Korea. i do not trust bar owners and their taps here. |

It's basically a makkoli factory in Cheongpyeong with a steel vat room for beer brewing on the basement. It's not really open to the public, unless they do an 'outing' once and a while. |

Great link, thanks! I remember going to their Yoido brewpub a number of years back. They used to run an "all you can drink" special for man won...too bad they shut it down. |

Now I am a bit fuzzy on the details but what I heard from a Korean friend goes something like this: Korea has some really crazy alcohol laws concerning the production and sale of alcohol. Only the three large beer corps are allowed to bottle and sell beer i Korea. I am of course talking about Cass, hite and the ob brewing company. It is illegal for anyone else to produce and sell bottled beers. If I am wrong about this I appologize also if anyone has any other info I am always interested to learn something new. |

Alley Kat (with a 'k', not a 'c', so it might be different) is the name of a microbrewery in Canada. Probably not the same one as in Korea. But the Canadian version is great! |

No apology needed... You're pretty much correct, except there are only two big beer companies in Korea. Hite and OB. Cass is owned by OB.
