Sorry if this has been covered a million times but;

I've been planning on taking a job at a hagwon starting this summer, I live VERY far from the nearest Korean embassy (St John's NL, I'm told I'd have to go to Montreal QC). Would be a 5 hour flight, or several days driving plus a long boat ride.

Can anyone tell me if I'll be able to get around this huge inconvienience

They may waive the interview, they may allow you to do it by webcam or they may require you to do it in person (their choice).

I just obtained my visa in-person at the Korean Consulate in San Francisco. It takes two trips, one to drop off materials and two to come back 48 hours later to pick up your passport with visa.

ANYWAY...

I was actually looking forward to whatever mysterious question the powers that be at the consulate might ask. To my vast dissapointment, there was no question. The first trip the young lady behind the glass simply took my materials (and my passport) and told me to come back in two days. She didn't really even look things over all that closely. Two days later I show up and the same young lady simply handed my passport back without a word. After confirming that the visa was in fact in there, I left. Just like that.

Kind of a let-down actually. Anyway, got my visa

After you have your interview (if they make you have one) they will ask you to come back in two days or so to pick it up. Just tell them that you live far away and you can't make another trip. They will mail it to you. It cost me about 16.50 for them to send it with a tracking number. Not a bad deal.

so from the sound of it, I will have fly all the way to Montreal just to hand them some documents? that is outrageously inconvenient and expensive. Kind of shocked that they would even expect that! I live on an Island that is over 1000 miles away from the embassy, Just to hand them some documents?

ok, well, apparently some people have gotten them to do it over webcam... I will call them on monday. If anyone qualifies for a webcam interview I do, St John's is about as far as you can get from a Korean embassy except for maybe the Northwest territories or Alaska
