I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to get a macbook with an educator's discount while in Korea. I checked out their website and they list the new 13" MacBook Pro for W1,420,000 which is a 120,000 discount.

I got it!

there was no 'check' to make sure I was really a teacher (the way US ed store used to be ) however you do need a Korean credit card.

Good news about that is, you can set it to deduct over 1,3,4,6,10, or 12 months.

Crap. It's so strange that Korean companies would require you to have a Korean credit card. What possible reason could there be for businesses to want to limit the amount of people that can buy their stuff?

I've bought through the Apple Education Discount before and didn't have to use a credit card. If you call them you can talk to an English speaking agent who will "reserve" the computer for you and will send you an email with a confirmation number and a CitiBank account number. You can then transfer the money to Apple's CitiBank account and a few days later you'll get a shipping notification by email.

Just wondering if can you get the educators discount by walking into the apple store in say myungdong or is it something else.

Also, I have a a Korean credit card and am wondering about the payment system regarding monthly installments - is there interest payments involved if you choose to pay over a period of time?

Also, does anyone know if buying say office is also included in the educators discount?

Actually, the education discount is not available through the brick and mortar stores in Korea. This is because they are not actual "Apple Stores". They are simply a reseller that Apple has chosen for the Korean market. As such, they cannot offer education discounts, refurbished products, or "build-to-order" computers. Those can only be had through a real Apple Store.

The online store in Korea is the "real" Apple Store. This is also why you have to wait several days to get your product, even though the product you want might be sitting in one of the brick and mortar stores here. Doesn't matter. If you order online, you are ordering through Apple and your product gets shipped directly from the distributer that is closest to you... for us, that usually means China or Singapore (Apple's two biggest distribution hubs in Asia).

You can try, but I guarantee that if you try to get the education discount, a refurbished Mac, or a build-to-order Mac at a local Apple reseller, they will quickly point you to the online store.

Thanks for the link. I also finally found it through the site.

Went into the frisbee store in Myeongdong.

With the payment system in-store it is limited to 6 months installments - no interests

will have to check the online education part to see if the installments can be spread over 12 months interest free

But I must say I am a life-long PC guy - but after playing with the Macair for 5 minutes I can see the attraction

Also, on-sale now in the store was Windows office for 169,000won - considerably cheaper than the online store

Just a though... If Chokse is right and the Mac gets shipped from China is there any chance that K-customs will try to tax it?
