So my contract ends September 23rd but I have to leave mid-August to get back to Canada for teacher's college.

I've got 8 vacation days left. Do I lose any? (I figure if I'm leaving 1/12th of a contract early I'd lose 1/12th of my vacation days, which is like 6.5 hours or so. Correct?)

Errr. You're forfeiting your contract and thus forfeiting any perks or benefits that your contract offers. Your employer certainly has the option of letting you have those days while you're still employed, but they're not required to.

Interesting. So what's the benefit of giving 30 days notice then? I guess I can say that I'll give the 30 days notice if I get my vacation days, otherwise no notice (since I won't lose anything). Does this make sense?

(FYI: I'm at a public school and have a good relationship with them. They already know I'm leaving but I haven't nailed the dates yet.)

If you've got a good relationship with them, why don't you ask them about your vacation days?

Under labor law, if you do NOT work a full year, you are entitled to 1 day for each calendar month worked.

IF you took a 2 week holiday at the last break then you would have used up your 11 days of holiday mandated by law so would have nothing left under labor law.

It is strictly between you and the school (so probably nothing).

Ah okay. I'll negotiate something with my school then. Thanks all for the information and advice!
