So much for stranger danger and predatory pedophiles.

Study Undermines Kidnapping Fears
BY SEAN GARDINER
The fear that a child could be snatched away by a stranger nags at many parents. But a new report examining cases from last year shows that in New York, it is extraordinarily rare for children to be taken by someone they don't know.
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services said Wednesday that 20,309 children were reported missing statewide last year. Just one of them was confirmed to have been abducted by a stranger, the agency reported.
The vast majority of the missing childrenalmost 94% of last year's totalwere runaways. Most of them were teenagers. |

you're much more likely to be murdered by a relative or person who knows you well

What raises my eyebrows about this article is that over 20,000 children were reported missing in only one year!
There were probably quite a few who weren't reported missing too!
What's up with all the runaways??? |

Some of this is custodial issues. Parents fighting. I had a friend who took his kids camping. Awakened in the middle of the night surrounded by law enforcement. They tried to charge him with kidnapping. Mother had a burr under her saddle and claimed he had taken kids without her permission. Common sense prevailed in the end fortunately for him. |

Wouldn't a burr on your saddle be worse? Or is saddle a euphemism for her ass? |

I think in this metaphor the mother is an unruly horse with a burr under her saddle, not the rider. |

Yeah, I considered that but still found it wanting. Maybe if had some experience with horses (or common sense?) or had been reading the thread with more than one eye I'd get it.
Anyway, I stopped by a garage sale today and bought a nice set of golf clubs for $15 (with the bag), so I'm okay. |

To keep things on topic, were there any missing kids in the bag? |

They had the house open and were selling stuff out of the first floor, but you couldn't go in the basement.
I listening at the door for a second, but I couldn't hear anything so I also bought a used poker set with cards and chips/chip holder for a buck (they were pretty much giving stuff away). |
