I am going to be living in Siheung as of beginning of May. I am interested finding DIY venues/ the local underground music scene. Also, I am looking for music collectives. Anybody have any suggestions?

They're letting 16 year olds in, now?

In any case... I know there are some punk scenes in Hongdae but nothing anywhere near comparable to back home. Korea is anemic when it comes to the words "underground", "scene" and "collective" (well, when it comes to collective in the context you're referring to).

People pay good money to buy things that look DIY and the sounds a guitar makes are "too noisy" for most Koreans.

There's quite a few DIY hardcore gigs on around Hongdae. There's a decent one next Saturday if you're about. Check the details here http://chadburger.blogspot.com/

I have no idea who that is. I just laugh at the idea of a punk scene in 2011. I can see it. Half way through a good mosh and someone yells: "oh no, someone broke my iPad!"

Well there is a punk scene and there is one in Korea.
I am not sure how many iPads are present.

In a country that is so traditional in the way that people of different ages are supposed to interact and where awful k-pop reigns supreme, punk rock makes total sense. most of the punk and hardcore bands can be found playing in Hongdae at places like Club Spot, Badabie, Club Crack, and DGBD. Sometimes they make their way over to Stompers and Woodstock in Itaewon. Busan also has Club Realize, Moo Monks, and Vinyl Underground. For a central location where you can find out about the bands that are playing these days and upcoming shows all around Korea, search "Korean Punk & Hardcore" on Facebook. Shows are listed there every week.

This facebook group will be used to pass on information regarding underground shows in Korea (especially punk, ska, and hardcore). Check back each week for updates.

There is a good punk scene in Hongdae. Relatively small and non-violent.
There's a guy who calls himeself Racetraitor who is really into the scene.
There's a site called Broke in Korea. Where bloggers discuss the scene.
There's another guy who calls himself Verve. He used to have his hair cropped like a skinhead. He's EX army and a really nice guy. Some of the most metally stable foreigners are into this scene. Most of them are very approachable too. Their is quite a sizable amount of Koreans into the scene too. Many of them have adopted a kind of eighties punk fashion sence. I've also noticed there's quite a large scootering scene that is based around a Vespa delearship in Hyewha.

Is he still around? I was wondering what happened to that guy.

He is. He just never posts on Dave's.

The punk scene is all but dead. Now it's all "hardcore." A change for the worse, in my opinion, but hey, it's still rock music.

Good for him! Wish I had that kind of discipline.

They've run out of options, really. I gave up. Everything is new is just a tribute to something else.

Your fledgling hating skills need sharpening, bro.
What gives you the motive to talk down to people who have a legitimate interest in music? You obviously don't know anything about the scene if you are ignorant about punk in 2011.
I think it's funny how people gain a lot of courage when they can hide behind a computer screen.
