It depends on what you want to do with it and where. |

If you ever want to teach English (not ESL) at the college level in the US, then English. |

What's your goal?
Elementary ed? Masters in Elementary Ed.
Highschool? Either one can work if you take enough courses to be qualified by your state to teach the subject. Check with your home state's department of education.
University? Masters in English.
For teaching in Asia....if you want to teach at a university, I'd say the Masters in English. Although both could be good.
If you want to teach at a prestigious hagwon, I'd say either one.
If you want to work at an international elementary school, I'd say Master's in Education. International high school - either one.
Or you could just cover all your bases and get a Masters in TESL. That way you could teach ESL when you came back to America too. |

A Masters in English won't be worth the piece of paper it's printed on if you don't go to a PhD from there. |

I can't see how a Masters in English would be worthwhile. They added a MA in English at my university while I was there and I remember there being some debate about why it would ever be needed.
If you want to teach English in a university, you'll need a PhD. If you want to teach at a lower level you're probably better off with a masters in Education. |

You could get a job correcting english essays for undergrad classes. I'm sure they pay $12/hr, maybe even $13! |

If you want to teach English at a college (i.e., composition, remedial/developmental reading and writing,) you may need an MA in English. In many places, an MA in Education does not qualify you to teach English courses. |
