At the age of 86. It would be no exaggeration to say that his career spanned eras, starting with 12 Angry Men in the late 50s, and continuing all the way up to Before The Devil Knows You're Dead a couple of years ago.

As well, he certainly introduced some memorable dialogue and imagery into the cinematic lexicon. I'm thinking specifically of Attica Attica!!, and I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!. Those two films in particular epitomize, for me anyway, 1970s social malaise.

There are still a LOT of his films that I haven't seen. I was impressed with Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, if only because a director Lumet's age could still make a thriller with general appeal to a younger audience in the 2000s. A few parts of that didn't really work very well, though.

Anyway, RIP.

I think everyone should watch 12 Angry Men.

Didn't he direct The Wiz? I noticed that wasn't listed among his achievements.

Heh. I thought about that myself. Not regarded as one of his shining triumphs, I guess, but I can't honestly say, since I haven't seen it.

And even if he ends up with something less than a masterpiece, it's still commendable for a director to try his hand at various genres.

You beat me to it.

Although Lumet wasn't my favorite director, he did make a lot of fine films.

An amazing body of work. I think of him as a 'New York City' director - Serpico, Q & A, Prince of the City, Dog Day Afternoon - but then Murder on the Orient Express? Amazing range. Yeah, he directed The Wiz, but, man-oh-man, his hits crushed his misses.

He was amazing.
