Any ideas?
I teach mostly elementary school age and one of the things I have done is paste glow in the dark stickers on the ceiling. The kids really loved it.
I would also like to know what Middle and High school teachers - as well as university teachers - decorate their rooms. Do you also put famous people up or copies of historical documents, quotes, etc?

Thanks

I teach elementary grades 1-3. I have rules poster (with their pictures demonstrating what to do and not to do) colors, numbers, a Where's the Rabbit Board (because the 2nd and 3rd graders are learning about prepositions), a Spring story board, a flower border for Spring (just mulitple pictures of flowers on one side of the wall), a When's Your Birthday Board--on their birthday month I put students pictures, How Are You poster and What Day Is It poster...Oh yeah, and a calendar I made.

I think the best ideas are having things that relate to what they're learning, that way you can go around the classroom and incorporate it into the lesson. It doesn't have to be the entire room, but one or two things you think are really important for them to see. Also, hangup any work they do or even pictures of them. They love to find themselves in pictures. And when they aren't in them, they'll let you know it's picture taking time.

Well, good luck!

Here is a collection of photos and tips I put together about classroom decoration. http://bit.ly/d8qj1x

Also, in EFL Classroom 2.0's resources, lots of posters to download and use for decoration. I also have a few blog posts on the topic. Alphabet cards from Jan Brett are the best I've ever found. Print, color (students) , laminate and put up in front of the class.

Last year, I covered one wall with velcro. It looked like vines, trees, bushes, and dirt. Each class was a vegetable or fruit, and every time they got points, they added a vegetable to their plot of the garden. Potato class won the popcorn party at the end of the term.

That is sweet. Smile

The sort of thing that makes me wish I had my own classroom.

What a clever idea. Your employer does realize she/he is lucky to have you on board, right?

IMHO the best classroom decorations are made by the students and I came up with mine quite by accident because at the beginning of the semester, I decided that my students needed nametags and that they would create them as collages. I was going to laminate them with clear plastic tape and have them all organized and so on and so forth.

Unfortunately some students were not so enthused about this and the laminating and organizing of some 300 nametags was looking like a trip to a gulag complete with salt mines. That was when I decided to hang them on the walls and even in the hallway where I have some places to hang posters. They will probably stay there until the next teacher comes.

I also like using bulletin boards to celebrate birthdays and student acheivements but these have proven hard to keep track of so I plan on replacing these with photos of my students participating in classroom activities.
