Is There a Perfect Personality for Expatriates?
An interesting article from the CHE. In my opinion the author is bang on in his assessment of successful expats. I have been here for a decade now and most of the successful individuals that I know are extroverts with an agreeable disposition. Also interesting is that the most successful expats aren't necessarily the most qualified, but the most empathetic.

Aren't those the kinds of people who do well pretty much everywhere?
I don't think people ever get ahead in life by being closed-minded and keeping to themselves. |

I'm empathic and conscientiousness but I have a disagreeable personality. Nobody's perfect! They can research this stuff all they want, but that isn't going to change the pool of available candidates. |

I would think the best personality for an expat depends on the country of residence. The culture of Brazil say vs. Korea would mean different expats are valued. |

As someone who was told quite bluntly by a couple of employers
"you need to change your personality" *~*
all I can say is yes, it helps to be an extrovert, talkative and be easy-going in the face of all the mayhem (or perceived mayhem) that one will face upon working in Korea.
Apparently, I was too quiet and I had the temerity to complain about things. Even though I was doing my best to get along with everyone, I was seen as un-cooperative.
All it takes is "ONE" complaint from one student to be put in the bad books. |

I am the perfect expat, and have none of the qualities listed in the article. I reject their idea of "perfect". |

A better question might be:
Are you the ultimate HUMAN BEING?
To which I would have to answer:
YES. |

Usually I enjoy the articles posted in the Chronicle, but this one reads like a shallow, simplified powerpoint presentation. |

I thought so too. That's probably because he spends a lot of his time with employers who speak English as a second language. |

Backache, asthma?
Is this a joke? |
