I'm planning on heading to Thailand to take a CELTA or a 120-140 hour TEFL course. Upon completion, I intend to find work in S. Korea
If I have all my paperwork, diploma, FBI check, etc., can I get a job (more importantly, Visa, I suppose) from Thailand? Or do I need to return to the States for a visa?
Would schools still honor the airfare component of most contracts, or would this be a problem since I would not be coming from a NES ountry?

| Nope, get thee back to the USA when you finish the Celta course. Korean immigration requires that you are in the country you are a citizen of when applying or something like that. Someone else will probably write and clarify this for you. I think you have to deal with the Korean embassy in the USA. |

| What about getting it before I go to Thailand? I hadn't considered that route. Visas start from when you land, right? Not when issued? |

90 days from date of issue if you can find an employer willing and able to hire you 120 days before you are needed.

Hey OP,
Just get the job in Korea and head to Thailand for the CELTA after your contract...if you're still keen. I would never advise against getting another cert but since its not needed in Korea, and flights are very expensive, just do a year here and if you still want it just hop on a cheaper flight down there and enjoy the sun for a month or two after completing it. |

I want to do a Celta or TEFL since I have no teaching experience, just my BA. I know I could get a job with just it, but I'd like to have a clue when I walk into a classroom. Unless I REALLY don't need it?

For Korea you really don't need it.
If you want the pay bump, get a 100 hour on-line TESOL cert (about 10% of the cost of a celta). It will give you some idea what you are in for.
If you are still keen after you put in your first year, spend 30 days in the LOS and get your CELTA. Then you won't have visa issues (subsequent E2s can be obtained anywhere) and you won't have spend the money if you decide that ESL is not where you want to spend more than a year or two.

I've also heard that Korea has changed the "law" once again and are allowing visa runs to Japan? Is this true? |

yes, Americans can do a visa run to Guam for their first E2.

Japan has always been an option for subsequent E2s. just not for 1st timers.

I did the Guam thing, but it's a bit pricey and you may well have difficulty finding a school that will reimburse your flight to Korea and pay for a Guam visa run. Once you're there it's super easy though. |
