How long do you think you could live in Thailand near a beach on 5,000,000 won, or about $4,200. Airfare seperate from that amount.

Just thinking it over, not too seriously yet. I've been there before but I only stayed in Bangkok for a week in a motel. If I were to stay long term I'd like to rent something. How much should I expect to pay for a little place with a/c somewhere decent near the beaches I guess to the south.
Anybody here gone there for a long time? How long did you stay?

I'm curious about this also. Something I would consider for the near future but not this year.

Thailand works out at 1M won a month for me. And thats actively doing stuff, seeing new places and travelling a lot.
Living on rice everyday you could sit in Thailand for half that.

I guess if you're a back packer and bum you can last as long as you like. Personally I stay in nice hotels, you can go be a bum anywhere, you're supposed to be taking a vacation. I answer 'none of the above'. A month 2 would be stretching it. Last time I did 5 million in 5 weeks, and I don't go near the women or the 'women'.

So when are you a bum if not when on vacation?

I haven't been there since 1997, so I'm not sure but I'll take a guess
at 39 baht to the US dollar

To last as long as possible with just a tent and sleeping bag...maybe 15 US dollars a day. About seven months if you're a hardcore traveller type and you know all the tricks and you can just enjoy reading paperbacks, swimming, talking, sunning, etc... and only drinking about once a week.
No massages, yikes!

I would last about six weeks on 50 bucks a day.

You can compromise at about 4 months and have a good time all around.

And I stated I would like to rent something - not stay in hotels.

I stayed in Bangok for a week and had a pretty decent time on a 3 or 4 hundred bucks which included souveniers. I felt rich!

But I was paying for a decent motel too. I think if I rented a place I could get by for a while, just not sure what rent is like....I heard you can get a decent place for a few hundred/month and a few hundred deposit.

I stayed on Ko Chang about 7 years ago and I think it worked out to about 12 bucks a day for a bungalow without a/c. I had a mosquito tent, running water and the lizards did a good job of keeping the mosquito count down. No weed.
I'm curious too. But I can't really help, sorry..it's been way too long.

Depends. Islands or big city? Touring or living native-style?

I was in Bangkok with that much money over the winter, maybe just a little more. I was drinking beer every day and going out at night, just a bit of traveling to Chiang Mai. It was almost 4 months before it ran out. Maybe I could have lived cheaper, but when I first arrived that wasn't my plan.

Frind of mine had worked up here for 7 years straight and then decided to take a whole year off and spend it in Thailand. He, likewise, was not intending to live like a pauper, looked pretty much the style we live here. I think he told me he spent upwards of $15K, though now that I think, I'm not sure if that was US or Canadian dollars.

The key to Thailand? If you want to spend approximately what you do to live hereor in your home country, or maybe even just a little less ... you can have a WHOLE lot more fun than here or home.

I think 1-2 dollars is a bit of an exaggeration for a simple chicken curry. Maybe more like 3-4 dollars.

Oh yeah and the bottled water is going to run up things a bit.

I know what you mean. I met long-term stayers in beach bungalows in Koh Phangan. I was on the same stretch of beach for a month and flabberghasted when I heard how long some had been in that neighbourhood already. One was a couple, twenty, from Hungary. They had worked as actors on a game show in Hungary and were taking time off to come up with a career strategy. They stayed in the small bungalows set further back from the white sands for 100 baht a day rent. They had been there four months. While a woman from Germany who had her childhood education certificate and had been working in a kindergarten seven years had also taken four months off at the same stretch of beach. Though she stayed in the bungalows for 300 baht close to the beach, and alone in that bigger, 'less rattan' bungalow.
Renting a motorbike is 150 baht a day. Spaghetti in the bungalows restaurant where you're encouraged to eat once or twice a day is 70 baht.
150 baht/day bungalow
150 baht/day motorbike rental
Three meals at 100 baht each
Totals 600 baht. You could spend a thousand baht a day, then, allowing for special prawn meals, beer, etc.

I just used an online currency converter and 1,000 Thai baht equals 30,000 won. I spent about 800 baht a day living simply as i assume you mean when you mention wondering about how long money would last.

I spent 3 months in Thailand last year. I rented a 2 bedroom appartment for 6000 bhat per, plus utilities. Those were another 2000 bhat (and I was getting scammed). I didnt have a functional kitchen, so I ate out all the time. That's about 20 bhat per meal at a street vendor. I had to travel a fair amount, sky train and cabs, which add up. Did some traveling on the weekends. I didn't drink or party too much.

I spent a little over 2 million bhat for the three months, not including course fees. As noted above, renting something long term will go a long way to decreasing your costs.

2 MILLION baht? Dude, that's like 58,000,000 won! You mean 2 million won, don't you?

As an aside, anybody take a vacation in Thailand, then hunt for and land a job in Korea from there?
