16 million? That'sa about 5 months worth. Are they going to pay you with canned goods and shotgun shells for the rest?

The number I have heard is 50 million won a year for a teacher. That is well enough to pay a teacher a fair wage, housing, severance, and the like. Also English teaching supplies. If a principal says there is no more money, that is a lie.

The number you heard seems right to me. My school used to get 48 million. They knew they would get less this year and expected about 35 ... but they only received 16 for this year. It's possible they get more later, but for now that's all they got. Many schools in Gyeonggi province are getting a lot less this year. |

At least an explanation of a province-wide policy, lots of red tape, etc. makes sense to me. This bull about having less money so they can't pay me less, doesn't. It could have just been the recruiters poor English skills that are making it hard for her to explain it to me.

I wouldn't mind starting in August/September. That's why I'm also applying to EPIK just in case. I'm just wondering when positions start opening up they will start posting jobs for September? I've heard "June" but I don't know how accurate that is.

Which city are you applying for, OP?

Ansan

Could be the OP has an MA, BA in English or Education.
Still right about the recruiter, however. Get another one! |
Right. MA, BA in English, TESOL. Lots of volunteer teaching experience, but zero fulltime experience. So with the MA I think I'm Grade 2+ instead of just 2
It's funny. I went and got the MA because I thought it would help me get a job, but now it's screwing me out of one. |

You could apply for universities...
...or you could work in the Middle East. |

I would love a university gig. I just haven't seen a lot of postings for them. When do they usually hire?
As for the middle east, maybe one day - but right now heritage reasons compel me to go to Korea. |

Heritage reasons?
Are you by chance... an overseas Korean?
Apply for universities, hagwons, and public schools. Open your net a bit wider- something will come
If you qualify for the F-4 visa, then you can change jobs easily.

why would you want to work for less? there are plenty of jobs out there for qualified teachers.
if gepik doesn't want qualified teachers, go apply at some place else. only thing you're doing is driving down the salary. |

My mother is Korean, so I think I qualify for F-4.
But thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'm going to stop being so picky about Ansan. Korea isn't that big anyways. I'm just going to cut communications with that recruiter, and start looking for better positions. |

Another truth
Anyway, you could search in the surrounding area of Ansan- as Gyeonggi BoE probably has areas surrounding there with an open position |

come on..... don't encourage the op to accept the salary lower than what he is qualified for. there are still plenty of jobs out there that pay fair salary. |

| I am working in Ansan at the moment and I can tell you that it seems that the school district is slashing as much money as they can from the English budget. |

| No one would want to associate themselves with GEPIK. The idiots on the Gyeonggi-do education board slashed the funds multiple times since 2010. Don't expect anything positive from GEPIK or from the Gyeonggi-do education board. |

I heard/read that kind of comment many times, but I doubt it reflects reality. Unless someone can come up with some proof, I believe it's just a rhumour that's been going on for while.
On the other hand, I can tell you that this year, for example, my ex-school in Gyeonggi province got about a third of the budget they usually got for English, so I believe what the OP was told can easily be true.
I worked for less before and I know others who did it or are still doing it, but what we all have/had in common is that we got extra free time for it.
Also, if you get a nice job for 100,000 won less or a crappy job for a 100,000 more, I don't know about you, but I'd take the better one with less pay just so I can keep my sanity. A bad job in Korea, no matter what the salary, remains a bad job... or gets worse with time.
OP, I sent you a PM. |
|
I believe it, GEPIK isn't like SMOE. SMOE sends out the money every month. School makes all the deductions and you get whatever's left. GEPIK on the other hand, assigns x amount money for a year or two years and it's up to the schools to make it last.
When you have that much more control over the money than its quite possible, it's spent on other things. I wouldn't say outright corruption. But who knows, a chunk of the money could be earmarked for English after school programs, teaching supplies, etc. |
