I arrived in Korea on July 27, 2010. I was told that I had to work 3 days for free to do classroom observation. My contract has is Aug 1,2010 to August 1, 2011. However, my Arc card expires on July 27, 2011. Does that mean I have to leave by July 27th or do I stay until August 1st as per the contract?

It means you will need to get an extension to complete the terms of your contract or be in an over-stay position.

You have 3 choices:

1) leave as required (by immigration) on the 27th. This may cost you your airfare and/or severance.

2) get the extension (takes a little paperwork but the problems go away).

3) stay without the extension and get clipped for the overstay.
(potentially: 100k won fine, delay of several HOURs at the airport dealing with Kimmi (possibly miss your flight), black mark in your immigration file (meaning EVERY time you want to return to Korea you will need a consular interview in your home country)).

Thanks for your response. I will ask the school if they can shorten the contract by a few days, if not I'll do the extension.

If you arrived on July 27, then your ARC should expire the day before the anniversary date: July 26.

Who told you that you had to work for free? That's completely bogus. You are entitled to (and your boss is obligated to) pay for work. The day you enter Korea on the visa with that boss as your sponsor is the date your employment with that boss began.

if you do that, make sure you get a new contract stating you will still receive severance pay.
