creeper understands.
Seriously, who comes onto a site, tells everyone that they are working in unfulfilling jobs, and then expects them all to say 'Yeah, you're so right, my job sucks, my life is horrible, I'm such a loser.'???
Maybe you're a genius and you have a great career ahead of you, but you realy need to work on your social skills. |

I don't think he's a loser at all. He got into a situation he doesn't like, and simply came online to ask if others feel the same way. I think he sounds pretty depressed actually. So, maybe people can give him a kind smack in the face rather than a nasty one. People in this situation really need to get out of this country, this career, and try something new. Again, I blame the one-year contract and not knowing what you're getting into until your director introduces you to the school and you begin teaching. That's the reality of the situation.
To the OP... seriously, don't stay in a rut in your life. Opportunities abound if you just take a risk and go look for them. |

I find this job fulfilling. Very very much so. |
Never even thought about trying this till I saw this post.

For me there were good days and bad days, usually more of the latter.
But when I had co-teachers who were co-operative and wanted me to be more than a tape recorder, I found I really enjoyed teaching.
In hagwon days, I enjoyed teaching adults a lot more than children, mostly because the kids regarded the hagwon as a playground and it was next to impossible to get them focused on anything other than games.
There were a lot more negatives and I often wanted to get out of Korea and get away for a while,
now that I'm in Canada and doing something involving physical labour I really wonder why I complained so much about Korea. I miss it a lot.
Even the uselessness of it all, I found I can feel useless in any job. |

| Like someone else mentioned, it really depends. If you can find that rare job where your treated with the respect of an equal or as someone who genuinely wants to teach then yea you can take pride & satisfaction in what you do. But if your working at say a technical school, students are too low or don't have any motivation and on top of that your constantly fighting teachers. Its really tough to see how or even whether your making a difference everyday. I think that's the line between being satisfied or not. |

AHHHH SILVER!!!
Yes. It was quite interesting to see XAG rocket from 14 bux to 39 bux an ounce over the past 2 years.
Nobody said silver would be that way even when XAU went up to 1200's 2 years ago. (Now Copper price is goin up folks.. there's a general shortage of metal thesedays)
IF ONLY I HAD BOUGHT MORE!! But then I made some dough with XAU so... I'm not too sad.
Remember folks. XAG and XAU are the only REAL money. These are the currencies that will be accepted ANYWHERE in the world when there's a crisis. Real Cash! They always have been and always will be. Don't put your trust in the FIAT currency, no matter what those Wall Street liars tell you.
Even if you are not investing in them, have a few dozen bullions of silver or a few small gold bars. Put them in your "emergency" bag. Radiation? Earthquake? War? You are the only one who can buy his way out of trouble. |
so when the world turns to [Mod Edit], how are you gonna use those bars of gold? shave off a few flakes at the local corner store for a loaf of bread? |

Of course, you'll even get to use the owner's knife. Right after he tries to shank you and rip off your bars |

What a surprise. Teaching esl in Korea makes you feel like a loser. Perhaps that's because it is a losers gig. Everyone knows the truth. Teaching esl, wherever you are, is not exactly a career to be envied. It's a job people fall into as opposed to getting into.
You teach esl when you can't think of what you really want to do with your life or you know what you would like to do but are to scared or lazy to go out and try and make it happen.
Personally, I quite like teaching at the moment, but I don't want to still be doing this in my 30's! Regardless of how much vacation time I can get out of it.

Yes sure, and you're a clown. For many, many people especially out of Korea this is a chosen profession. This is my vocation in life, if it isn't yours then you shouldn't be doing it!! You're doing the profession and your students a disservice you ignoramus. |

I decided at an early age that I wanted to become a teacher. I have been teaching for a very long time. Teaching is my career. I wouldn't consider myself lazy. I put a lot of hard work into my career. I wouldn't consider myself scared. I have been bold enough to invest my efforts into my career, with satisfactory results. Overall, I have a very satisfactory career, family life, personal life, and social life.
Any gig can be a winner's gig or a loser's gig. Perhaps, it's not the gig. Perhaps, it's you? |

Sorry, but that's the extent of your ambition? To teach esl in Korea? I think you're well aware that you're in a minority (albeit, a very small one).
Nonetheless, I apologise if I offended you. |

So why don't you tell us all about your great ambition and we can all rubbish it in the customary way. What is it, make a lot of money? become a CEO for a big corporation? write a best selling book? Or maybe train to enter one of the 'serious' professions like law or accountancy? All human activity is ultimately pointless my friend, as we all end up in the ground in the end. The best we can hope for, if we're not talented enough to bring joy to millions through our work, or curing cancer, is to provide enough for our families, be content within ourselves and try to make other people's lives enjoyable along the way. At least with teaching you have the opportunity to do the last one in a very immediate way. |

If teacher's are misfits, and ESL teachers are even worse misfits, I'm okay with that. Isn't it always the geeky misfit who invents something, or ends up doing something amazing? Teaching in Korea isn't that amazing, but my sister the mortgage broker admits a certain envy.
We get a lot of freedom in our classrooms so how you develop as a teacher is mostly up to you. You can be a monkey, playing games just to play games, or you can use those games to teach, reinforce, and build trust in the classroom.. |

| I'm just doing ESL until I finish my book about travelling through Europe. It's a racous tale, full of humorous anecdotes, a motley cast of characters, and the climax is that I make an important spiritual discovery about myself. It's bound to be a bestseller. |
