So here's the situation. I worked for a school for 1 year, renewed my visa before I left, and didnt come back. It has been 4 months and my director never cancelled my visa. Since then, I have decided to return to Korea, and have already found a new position. The problem is that my E-2 visa is still sponsored by my old school, and the director refuses to give me a letter of release or cancel it becuase he is still upset that I never came back. Is it possble for me to return to Korea a few days before my new contract starts, go to immigration and cancel my visa on my own? Or will doing some sort of visa run to Japan cancel my visa? Do I even have any options, or am I SOL until he decides to give me the letter of release or my visa expires? Any help, advice, or direction would be amazing!

You could come early and cancel it in person. I think that this is not very common but do-able. Do you still have your ARC? When you come back to Korea, just go to immigration and ask if it's still valid. If so, cancel it and head to Japan. If it's been cancelled, then you're good to go. Your boss might have cancelled it anyway just in case you were sticking around on that visa.

Maybe someone else knows if you can check at a Korean consulate about whether it's been cancelled.
