I heard the same story quite a few times looking for a job this time around. They will not allow you to go for less pay, red tape and bureaucracy seem to be the reasons I got.

Looking at this threads from a clearly "outside" POV I'm very much shaking my head at what I am reading. I would like to give the opinions a benefit of the doubt but I also need to put some perspective on the contributors. Are the folks who are complaining about GEPIK the same ones who eschew being placed in rural locations because there is "nothing to do". Are the folks who are having trouble with the bureacracy the same ones who get a lot of headaches from hang-overs?

Here in the States the educational system and its programs are constantly being pared-down though there is not a commensurate paring of administrative positions. In this way, talking about such similar reductions in Korean schools does not seem that far-fetched.

But going back to the other issue, I'm noting that there are more than a few indications that some folks may be making trouble for themselves by, perhaps, demonstrating a less-than-professional approach to what they are doing. If GEPIK is as disasterous as may be made-out here, I can't imagine anyone working for them at any time, yet, apparently somebody must be working for them since the program still exists.

It might be helpful to hear a more balanced assessment of this program for people like myself. FWIW.

Best Wishes,

Bruce

but I'm sure you will make whatever kind of over-generalizations and false assumptions that suit your personal bias.

Thanks for your response. Sometimes communicating through this venue can be perilous so I hope I didn't offend anyone's sensibilities. I am sincerely in search of objective information in order to preclude the very "over-generalizations" and "assumptions" you mentioned.

I guess my question can be simplified.

If the GEPIK program is as poorly funded and poorly run as these posts would lead me to believe, why is anyone working for them? Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

Best Wishes,

Bruce

I apologize for my hasty previous post.

I think there is a lot of un-professional behavior as you noted, but there are lots who try hard and want to contribute in a meaningful way.

The ones who wake up with hangovers are not likely those who want to do more.

No damage; no foul. Laughing

I have been a professional educator and counselor for my entire career and at this stage of my life the treat is to do what I enjoy doing, but in another culture, for a change. The kids are grown and the house is paid-off and there are more than a few of my friends who would just as soon never see the inside of a classroom again. I have simply never felt that way about teaching.

Flipping the coin over, I have crossed pathes with more than a few folks who left me wondering why they just didn't do everyone a big fat favor and go sell cars for a living instead pretending to teach.

Best Wishes,

Bruce
