I had a copy of my degree notarized, & now it must be send for a state apostille.
Do I have to get the degree apostilled in the same state in which I received the degree? Or can I just have it apostilled in the state in which I live? Just wanted to clear this up before I send documents away. |

Are you sure you need to have your degree apostilled? My employer only needed my FBI CBC apostilled and degree notarized. |

I am sure the degree copy needs to be apostilled after it is notarized.
I just wasn't sure if it must be notarized/apostilled in the state of degree issuance, or the state in which I now reside. Or maybe it does not matter.
Help?...anyone?... |

I had the same problem as you. Some SOS offices will only affix an apostille to documents produced within the state. For example, New Jersey will not affix an apostille to an out-of-state document. I had to go to Massachusetts, the place where my degree comes from, to get my apostille for my diploma.
Note that wherever you decide to get the apostille, the notarisation must be done in the same state. The SOS is only confirming that the notarisation was performed by one of the state's notary publics (some states may have special agreements with other states and can accept out-out-of-state notarised documents).
My recommendation: call your SOS office and see if they will take an out-of-state document. If they don't, try to find a nearby state that will, or perhaps go back to the state of your alma mater. Please note that every state is different, and some (California?) has an extra step involved before you can get the apostille.
Best of luck. |

Going along with what the above poster said:
Many states will apostille anything that has been notarized in that state. So if you get your local bank to do the notary, get that authenticated then you should be able to head to the SOS office to get the apostille.
However, I do not think any state will apostille a document that has been notarized in a different state.
Either way though, calling cant hurt. |
