[clueless in Korea]

So, this past weekend I spilled a minimal amount of water on my MacBook Pro. I assumed the water only spilled on the keyboard plastic mat; however, the next day it would not turn on. I took it in to the Mac Store at COEX. They called the next day and said it would cost 2,500,000 Won to repair. WTF! The computer itself was only 1.5 million won. They said my logic board and the part that attaches to the power chord (maybe, the power supply) were both destroyed. I don�t understand how two parts can cost almost twice as much as the computer itself.

So, Question One: Does this sound right? Should two parts cost this much?

Question Two: I think I�ll have to buy a new macbook. So, I plan on selling my broken one for some extra cash. It�s a MacBook Pro 13�� Unibody (standard specs I guess) and was bought in Nov. 2010. It will have a damaged logic board and power chord but a new hard drive. How much can I expect to get for this if I try selling it?

Of course that repair price is ridiculous.......I don't know how they can even come up with that.

I can't see anyone wanting to buy your macbook if the "logic" board, which I assume to mean the motherboard, is broken. Plus maybe other damage. Perhaps someone who happens to have Mac parts and does refurbishments........but in Korea????


If you're committed to Mac then you're probably going to end up buying a new Macbook and keeping your broken one. Maybe someone would give you cash for the working parts.....like screen, HDD, RAM.


Of course, if I were you, I'd go out and get a nice new approx 1,000,000 won Windows laptop which will give you the same performance as a Macbookpro.

Thanks for the reply. Glad you ALSO said it was ridiculous. However, the people at the store obviously think this is normal.

I don't expect to get much from selling a broken computer, but anything would be nice. And I'm sure there are some computer dudes out there that could put the remaining parts to good use.

Even in the US the price of replacing a logic board--on any computer, really--is astronomical and usually the price or buying a brand new computer.

The choices here, no matter what, suck.
1. Fix the laptop at 2.5 million won
2. See if maybe someone, somewhere can do it for cheaper (for a MBP in Korea I'd be surprised if you could get less than 1 million)
3. Buy a new laptop.
3a. See if you can find someone to buy it for parts.

The lesson learned:
Be careful with liquids. If you do spill, turn off the computer IMMEDIATELY, unplug it IMMEDIATELY and remove the battery IMMEDIATELY. Allow the computer to set for about 72 hours (the longer the better) while the moisture dries from the electronic parts.

Turning the laptop on/leaving it on is what will fry parts of the computer. Liquids + Electricity don't mix.

A mac with liquid damage is useless.
Unlike most laptops macs are almost all in one.
The cpu can't even be upgraded since it's a part of the logic board.
Also if the spill leaked into the keyboard chances are the ram and hdd have been damaged too.
So this leaves you with maybe the lcd?

Yeah, turning it on the next morning is what killed it. Learned that 72 hours too late.

If you're insistent on a Mac and reasonably computer savvy, look up some Hackintosh as well. Could get a decent new laptop and hack OS X onto it.

Geez that's a lot. I have nothing to offer but the suggestion that you use a keyboard condom in the future. I've spat tea in laughter a few times, and it saved my MBP. I hope you can find a cheaper repair guy. If I hit Yongsan in the next week or so, I'll ask my mac guy if he knows of a place. Best of luck.

NYC_Gal. Thanks. Oh, I did have the keyboard condom on, but I think some spilled from the side too. Or maybe the keyboard condom poked a hole in itself on purpose. Clever keyboard condom.
