Hi there,
I live in the UK and found an iPhone 4 on my way home from a few nights ago. It seems a bit odd as it was in a cover case (so clearly was being carried around by somebody) but when I tried to switch it on to ring someone from the Contacts, it was on the startup 'plug into iTunes to activate' screen. There's a SIM inside the phone but perhaps it's been de-activated or something. I considered putting my own iPhone SIM into the phone (or the SIM into my iPhone) in the hope of being able to access the old Contacts list, but I'm worried that if the phone has been stolen and/or dumped then my name will show up somewhere! Can anyone give any advice on what I can do to try to find the rightful owner? Thanks in advance! |

Thanks, I'll pop my SIM in it later and plug it into iTunes. Sorry to be an idiot but what is a tethered jailbreak? My iPhone isn't jailbroken so I'm not too well up on it...and what would this mean for my chances of finding the owner? |

There's 2 types of jailbreaks, tethered and untethered. Tethered means that if the phone is ever turned off, it needs to be plugged into a computer in order to be turned on again. Untethered functions like a normal phone where you can turn it on and off at will with no outside connections. |

You could find the owner by reporting the serial number to any apple store. Probably the stand-up thing to do. |

Or pop the SIM card out, see the company, and take it to them. They'll be able to identify the person based on the phone number. |

Thanks everyone, I live in Leeds (which doesn't have an Apple store) so I'll take it to whoever the provider is. |

Thanks for the help everyone, I finally managed to track down the mobile number of the person the phone belonged to and have sent them a message with my contact details and to let them know that the phone is wiped but otherwise safe and sound. |
