Security researchers have discovered that the latest operating system powering the iPhone and iPad keeps a log of everywhere you go, recording both the location and time you were there.
The feature has been around since June 2010, meaning some iPhones have nearly a year of location history recorded in a single file -- every step, trip to the park, family vacation and more..... |
This is kind of scary. I don't buy that this was just some kind of mistake. I bet the Korean media will jump all over this, and the local gov't could go so far as to suspend I-phone sales until it's removed (although I trust Samsung even less). Anything to slow the I-phone juggernaut! |

Guess that explains how the Black Helicopters always seemed to know where I was ... |

Wait a minute. How is this different from SK or KT using a system to track phones? I lost a phone a couple of years ago and SK printed out a time stamped-schedule of locations where my phone was used until it was lost. I could also get them to print out my contacts and text messages from their servers.
Newsflash for Fox: if the police want to get a hold of your location history via cellphone records, all carriers keep them, and are liable to release them. |

Meh.. this doesn't really bother me at all.
So as you walk around your phone jumps from cell tower to tower. I kind of already expected my phone to make an internal list of those somewhere. So some programmer can hack the software and dig out the list. Then they can write an app that puts it on a map. Big deal.
If your jealous wife steals your phone, downloads the app and tracks your whereabouts, you've got bigger issues. |

You expected your phone to "make a list" of places you have ever been with your phone and send it to Apple? Tragic!
The "I've got nothing to hide" argument? Busted!
Apple can do no wrong? Victim!
A jealous wife does not indicate a cheating husband. Logic! |

All phone brands send locations to carriers. Naive! |

wtf are you on about?
I worked for AT&T wireless for over 2 years. The customers even assumed they were being tracked and would often call us requesting the location of their lost phone, or their daughter's whereabouts. The media blows this stuff out of proportion.
Who cares if Apple knows where I go? I'm not a ninja. Anyone can see where I am by simply opening their eyes and looking at me. Or looking at a list of my credit card purchases. Or watching video from the thousands of cameras all over the city.
Tinfoil hat for you. |

if you know your device has GPS in it then you should know that they can obviously track you with it. |

It is preposterousness to expect phones, especially smartphones, to do what they do and not have this kind of data. |

The only reason I see how this could be a problem is the fact that some mofo somewhere could come up with a nasty way of abusing this system or creating some sort of a scam or a worm out of it
knowing someone's location can be used for malicious purposes for sure and since now we know there is a file that stores all that, in a year or so someone will find a way to exploit it and to make iphone users suffer.
Unless Apple changes this with their next update...
I've heard Android keeps the same file, but it's actually wiped clean every few days by the system, so there's no way to know ALL of your locations, only most recent ones |

My iPhone location file shows me being in North Korea several times. Never actually been there myself, but apparently my phone has.
My point is that the file is wildly inaccurate. There are far easier ways someone can get information about you than this fairly inaccurate method.
I agree with what the majority of people in this thread are saying. This is really nothing to worry about (be it Apple or Google).
For those of you who seem freaked out by this, maybe it's time for you to cut up your credit cards and live off the grid, cause that's the only way someone won't be able to find information about you. |
